I am going to build a ar-15 varmint rifle and wanted to know what uppers you guys like. I am looking at
Dpms High rider upper
model 1 sales
Del-ton

What do you guys like,

Thanks in advance

I run both DPMS and Del-Ton. Both are good uppers and if i'm not mistaking, Del-Ton is running Wilson barrels./ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gifGo either way and you will be happy. Good luck and have fun building your Black gun. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

Trevor, you're going to have a lot of decisions to make during the course of this build. The very best advice I can give you is to stay with name-brand components that are backed by a good customer service department. DPMS, DTech, Rock River, Bushmaster, and any other popular name will serve you well. Just stay away from "bargain" components that have a brand that you've never heard of before. You might get lucky and save some funds.....and you might not.

Also, get a firm plan of action BEFORE you start buying. Don't waste any money buying stuff you don't need, or will change out in 6 months. Get what you want up front, and you'll be better off financially in the long run. Been there...done that. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

Steve.

Thanks,
I actually want to build 2 ar's , one in a varmint model and one in a M4 with Dpms free float handgaurd. So i was going to buy 2 uppers, and i think i want the dpms high rider for the varmint build. I was thinking a model 1 sales or a delton upper with M4 feed ramps for the M4 model.

thanks

Steve.

After a few years of lurking on the edge of "Black Rifle Fever" I bit the bullet this year and built one. I used a DTI (Del-Ton) upper for two reasons.

#1 they use Cardinal to supply their uppers (same as Bushmaster and a few other AR companies)

#2 they use Wilson barrels!!!! My standard 16" with a free float tube is get some amazing accuracy! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

What a lot of people get caught up in is the "brand name" deal, but the fact of the matter is there are a few forgers that make the uppers and lowers for everyone. The only thing that changes is the grade of that forging. The large name companies are the ones picking up the best of the best in the forging world. If you lay a Bushmaster, Smith & Wesson, DPMS, & a Del Ton 16" M4 down beside one another. The only thing that is different are the roll marks (logos)... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif So do you want to spent the $900 on a Bushmaster? Or... the $650 for the DTI? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Moral of the story... brand name AR = good forgings! No matter the brand and long as it is a decent name you will get a decent forging. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

If you go with a high-rider upper, check first and make sure you can mount a set of iron sights. An EOTech and similar systems like to be mounted at standard flat-top height and will co-witness with BUIS when mounted like that.
Maybe that's not a concern for you.
Buy an upper from D-Tech and pay him to true the barrel mating surfaces to the bolt carrier surfaces, that's the secret to accuracy.

I have three ARs and two have the DPMS EOP (hi-rider) upper receivers and the third also has an EOP configuration, I'm just not sure what brand as it was furnished by the builder.

I prefer the EOPs as they don't require any additional risers or extra high scope mounts... I had an M4 'shorty' with the conventional flat top and an EO-Tech sight and always felt like I was never going to get my head low enough on the fast shots... I switched it over to my DPMS EOP and it's really comfortable for me now.

The DPMS has no forward assist and dust cover. It also has these ugly ribs along the bottom of the receiver. Those are complaints against it, but those ribs and the thickness of the receiver make it very strong. For a varmint rifle there isn't much need for a forward assist and dust cover. My AR is built on a DPMS lo-pro receiver. It's the same basic upper without the higher rail. I'm very happy with it.

Stag or Oly for me built a 243WSSM Oly upper, and a 458 Socom Stag upper. The Oly is reenforced some for the WSSM catridge. The Stag only needed the ejection port opened up for the Socom. I have heard a lot of great things about the DPMS as well.

On the last two or three that I have put together I've used Stag M-4 receivers, the fit and finish is very good and I like the feed ramp cuts which assist in more reliable feeding.
These and the RRs along with others are made by the same company, I believe CMI or something like that. I like to use the same manufacturers upper and lower receivers if at all possible.

I think Stag makes the best M4 upper receivers on the market, they also make them for several other manufacturers to that manufacturers spec's. All spec's are not the same.

I bought a M&2 Arms kit and I have been nothing but happy with it. They are supposed to be using LMT uppers which is widly considered top notch. I bought an M4 style and will be buying their varmint style without hesatation (Sp?)

I think i am going to order a del-ton upper with M4 feed ramps. Hope i made a good choice.
Now got to decide which Buttstock and which scope mount.
I am going to order a 16" m4 upper barrel with free float tube and a spector gas block also.
thanks for all the help guys
