ok guys, ive been calling for a year and a half and have called in a pack of wild dogs, crows, hawks, deer, but havent had any luck with coyotes or bobcats. i have an electronic call i bought at cabelas with cottontail distress tapes and three hand calls(dont remember the brand) i'm getting skunked. i try to keep the wind in my favor and watch downwind, but i live in eastern kansas and alot of the places i have to hunt are covered in brush so i have to try and call them out into the open. i dont worry about animal density there everywhere i here them on my back porch about every night, seen two across the street behind the neighbors house two days ago getting a drink from his pond. my question is, can you guys give me any suggestions an hand calls that are very effective. the ones i have, i think they make to much if a whistling sound while blowing on them. the electrnic call has a sound in it that doesnt sound at all natural. any help would be appreciated.

It doesn't matter how well the sound is to you, If it sounds like a dying elephant they will come, if they are interested. This time of year coyote respond well or sometimes better with coyote vocals. It is breeding season, and they start thinking at the other end of themselves. If you are calling all those other animals in, your doing it right. Its only a matter of time before you get a coyote in.

Mike three words for you, "Arizona Game Calls". Get the "The Terminator" Jackrabbit and Cottontail distress. These hand calls are awsome. These calls can be purchased through www.allpredatorcalls.com Just remember to blow the call backwards prior to calling on a set (it cleans out the belly button lint and other stuff) Use these calls and you will be hip deep in coyote hides. Good luck!

Like smith said, the quality of the sound, But you have to be in the right place at the right time.

I mostly use the Vermintor Tweety and I have had some great success with that call, also a tally ho is a great call for yotes. But you can;t beat a tweety on cats and foxes, Thats mainly what my target animals are.

I love my Dan Thompson PC-2. I think the sound is way better than some other cottontail calls. I go back and forth with the tally ho and the Primos lil' dog for howling.

I had heard so much HYPE on the Crit-R-Calls,that I finally broke down and Bought the pee wee, standard, and Magnum. The sounds are great, you can change reeds easily, and you can change reed thickness for different sounds. Did they live up to the hype? Well I only carry three calls anymore on my lanyard and they all say Crit-R-Call. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I use the Regulator 10 and the Raspy Coaxer from Primos. They work great for me. One thing that drammatically improved my success when I first started was learning how to blow the call with my diaphram, not my lungs.

The ONLY call I use is a Crit-R-Call Pee-Wee. I tryed the electronic call and there was no luck in that, I bought the ol' tally-ho and that thing sucks...Its too slow sounding. I have been calling for only about 7 month now and have taking 25 yotes and a bobcat!...With Pee Wee!

propanemike, I would like to say first off I am no pro when it comes to calling but I kill my share every year. Have you tried calling in some of the brushy areas you talked about. Alot of the places I hunt I can't see more than 30 or 40 yards and I have had better success calling in these areas rather than try to get them out in the open. Also some areas where you know coyotes are there and they have been hammered time and time again, you can try some different calls or maybe try some howling sounds. Hope this helps you. okhunter

Mike,

Some of the best callers I know have come here to Kansas this year and gone home humbled. For two years, something that I can't quite pin down has just scuttled the calling all to heck and then some. If you've been calling unsuccessfully since mid-December, it's not you. I stay in touch with people all over the state and the eastern 2/3 of the state have been rough going that entire time. They're out there, but they sure don't want to respond. Howling isn't even bringing them in consistently. In fact, two weeks ago, I wrapped up my season doing a video with a couple guys from out west. We were using a FoxPro calling over tracks less than a half hour old and... nada. With the crew we had, there was over 80 years of calling experience out there and we couldn't fool that danged coyote. Coyotes can be like that. Hang in there and keep your head up. It's coming on denning time. Let coyotes do as they're wont to do in the Spring and just study up for greener pastures next Fall. I'm just west of you in Abilene and would be more than willing to help you out if I can. You can peruse my calls and success shots at my website listed down here below.

thanks guys, every bit of encouragement helps. ive heard of several of the calls mentioned and im going to try some of them as money allows. i know its a matter of time but i'm pretty impatient at this point. freezing your tucus off and seeing nothing to take home is fustrating, not to mention the hell my wife gives me. i'm not going to give up though, i love being out there and theres always something out there worth telling someone about, even if you never fire a shot. thanks again.
