whats a good call?

Hey I am new to this board and fairly new to predator hunting. My dad used to hunt and trap for fur back in the 70's and we have gone calling a fiew times but have never really gotten into it. We are now trying to get into it and we have a few closed reed calls and I am in the process of making a electronic caller. My question is what is a good open reed call to get, we dont have one and I would like to get one. I hear that they are beter than a closed reed. Is that true? thanks in advance.

I am new to predator hunting also, and the calls i decided on getting were from Rich Cronk (a moderator on this board, who hand makes & tunes calls that have a GREAT reputation!)

After doing some research i ordered one of his killer calls and a cow horn howler, both open reed calls (the killer call can be a closed reed call also by using the reed protector), so for a versitale call i would go w/the killer call, and for a howler his cow horn howler(from what i have heard) is the best in the world

My calls from Rich should be here next week and i cant wait to try them out /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif Ill let you know how it goes

I am sure a few of the masters will be able to help you out alot more

In my opinion you can't beat any of Rich Cronk's calls. I have one of his howler's and love it. An open reed call is much more versatile than a closed reed call, and in that respects probably better. I would also reccommend a Crit'R call standard for a good open reed call. They sell relatively cheap, as well. I think they are around 12 bucks, give or take. Happy hunting.

The most versatile calls you will ever get are the Rich Cronk killers. Standard or jr models. With practice you can make any sound you want without worrying about a break in the pitch anywhere in it's tone range. I have put them both to some hard use in the past year and I don't leave the truck without them. Jimmie

I really agree with these guys you can't go wrong with Rich Cronks calls.

I have the killer call and the howler and they work great. On top of that with both calls you can do puppy whines and sound like a wounded or injured dog.

good luck
