What ( in your experience ) is the best shooting .243 winchester rifle in the Remington,Savage,Tikka price range? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowingsmilie.gif

I'm hoping to get a lite stainless model, but accuracy is more important to me than weight.

I'm looking for a gun that can hit metal plates, chucks, coyotes, paper, etc. at long ranges.

I'd love to have a gun built like you guys do, but right now I'm in the "buy it off the shelf stage"

Thanks /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Sure is hard to beat the savage off the shelf! I shoot the 55 grain ballistic Winchester Supreme with excellent results, 3/4 inch groups at 100 yards and I can tighten it up more with handloads!!

It is hard to say, I've shot Remington's and Tikka's. I shot both in .300 Win Mag in a sporter weight and they were pretty close ( possibly the Remmy outdoing the Tikka ). I have a Remington in .243 and it will shoot under a half inch with some 100 grain factory loads. Savages are a very underrated rifle. To me they don't look pleasing to my eye, but they are probably one of the best out of the box shooting rifles that you will find. I guess I have to buy a good looking rifle, but I do plan on getting a Savage in the future. Good Luck.

Savage uses button rifled barrels, and their floating bolt lug design also enhances accuracy.

The Remingtons are prettier. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

But the Savages are generally a LOT more accurate...

I have a savage 110 that I bought in 1999 and it has been the most accurate gun I have ever shot..

Ill never part with it.

I shoot Winchester 100gr power points (CXP2) and it is a true tack driver.

i would look at the remington sps varmint. these things really look like shooters, and if you don't like the stock, remingtons have more after market stocks than you'll know what to do with.

The combination, even though Ive always like the 243.

What about Ruger? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif I have been shooting under 1" with mine for 30+ years. I shoot the 65gr V-max right know. I have used almost every bullet made. Never had a problem.

I am not sure why, but you dont hear alot about Rugers on this site. I think they are fine guns, plenty accurate. Maybe its because Ruger doesnt seem to cater to a specific shooter such as varmint hunters, you know, thumbhole stocks, flutted barrels, other extras. Seems they just make a no frills do all rifle!

243 winchester, its all good,Ive had a couple ruger M77s that shoot like a house of fire, for fun I sit at the bench out at the range and shoot 20 oz. plastic pop bottles full of water and shot after shot watch em blow like theyve got a grenade in em at 400 yds.Gotta love them 243s........

I would say all of the above mentioned will shoot better than the shooter with the right load. I think it comes down to shooter preference and how the rifle fits you. Me personally, I would go with the Savage. Best out of the box accuracy on the market today. And dont turn away the Stevens 200 in your selection process. Very accurate and can be modified to the shooters liking with a little creativity. Plus the Stevens can be bought for under $300 as well. Leaving lots of money left for a good piece of glass.

Good luck in your decision.

I have shot serveral of the Remington 700 LSS model in 243 that have the stainless action, barrel, and a laminated stock. Both of these guns shot less than half inch with the actions bedded, barrels free floated, and a trigger job.

These 700 stainless rifles that I have shot in many calibers are unreal accurate when bedded, barrels floated with a trigger job.

I have many custom guns, and the 700 LSS in 243 shoots almost as good as my best custom gun in 243 AI.
