whats the best breed of dog for dening

I have a Jagdterrier. Some use them for denning game like coyote and bobcat. Mine won't hole up worth a spit which is fine with me because dens are off limits to us in Iowa. But others have good luck with them. She'll tackle the devil above ground though.

Patterdales are the only other breed I would recommend, Get a hold of Vargy here at PM, he has a young one that he got last year. The only problem with Patterdales is thier size. Generally they are 15 lbs or less. Most use them on coon and ground hogs, I bet one could tackle a fox. A coyote or bobcat 1 on 1 might be a problem. Bu tI here they have grit to spare.

I'd recommend a Jagd with breeding on the large size if you want to think about coyote. Mine is a 21 lbs female. Males are larger. And I still don't think I'd want mine to try to tackle a old male dog by herself.

Jd,

Welcome to PM. This is a great place and we look forward to your participation. As for your question, you could have started out with a little easier one. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Read the posts in this forum. There are many good breeds of dogs. I have a Mtn Cur, Duanne has catahoula's and border collies, Vargy has everything /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Each breed has it's pro's and cons. What I'm getting at is there is no "best" breed. It's kinda of like asking what's the best caliber or best gun. I like hounds as they can run miles and miles and are as tough as nails. Mtn Curs are used a lot by ADC folks, but so are Aeridales.

To sum it up, the best hound is the one your willing to haul around in the back of your truck. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

first off check your laws to see if you can do that where you are from!!
I have a male that is 1/2 jack russle and 1/2 fox that can handle a big boar coon by him self!! He is 26 lbs
I have a little female patterdale that thinks she can tackle a bear!!
She is 12 lbs at 7 months old and wont get alot bigger then that!!
she has jumped right on coyotes that the hounds have caught and a few weeks ago we went barn hunting with my terriers and some guys fron west of here that had patterdales!!
You want to see little dogs that has heart!! them patterdales dont know what back up means!!
As chris said Jags might be a little bigger in size so it depends on what game your going to tackle!!

Vargy

Welcome to the board, but when it comes to "denning",I have no experience.I do call around dens, but none of my dogs will "go to ground."

vargy - thanks for info. yes, i did check with the washington fish and game about denning. they sayed it was legal to den coyotes and fox with dogs, but it is not legal to den bobcats.

duane - thanks for welcome.

If you mean coon, I like patterdales or jagds. Two different styles though.

If you mean coyotes, I will be breeding up some for some coyote hunter out west. Mainly patt/pit/airedale/jagd. Smaller, but big enough to dish out the damage needed to finish a coyote. In the works now. The main problem that I have is not enough coyotes in my area to test them on. I have to ship them back out west to find out if they work. I will keep them along with my patterdales for barnsmashing and woodpiles.

Rolly I'd like to see pics of those dogs.I might be willing take one.I killed 110 yotes last year and 127 the year before, also 143 badgers in two years. My catahoullas are good decoy dogs, and will find a den, but to big to get in.They try to dig stuff (yotes, badgers)out.but the hard pan here it's not efective. Duane

I don't have any breed up yet. I have the patts and the airedale, my buddy Heath out west has the jagd, and a couple people have tiny pits. I will get them crossed up and let everybody know. They would be free to people who will hunt them hard. Duane, from the sounds of it, you are the type of person these would be meant for.

I am not trying to create a new breed. Not by a long shot. I am trying to fill a niche. They would be generalists in the sense you could use them for yotes, coon, badger, and general varmint killing. The guy that created the Texas terrier did the same thing, but did it for money and with no plan in his breeding. These will be called mutts because that's exactly what they will be.....I will keep people posted.

I've been thinking of a DD/GWP crossed to a Jagd. Both my DD's make great decoy and fur dogs but are too big to work many holes or tight spots in brush, barns. ect.. It would be intresting to see a cross of the two. I would like to take the versatility of the DD's and match it with the fur drive of a jagd. All in a size package that can deal with coyotes yet fit in most brushpiles and barns.

The DD's are straight killers when they can get one above the ground. My female had to learn to "come back" when decoying coyotes. She loves a good fight and wouldn't back down even when the coyotes had the odds stacked against her. She finally learned to respect the tone and comes back 100% now, but she took her share of damage on the road to learning it. She always trys to retrieve fur after its killed or shot. It's funny watching a 60# DD bring back a 30# coyote. I have a few pics of her retrieving one I shot last week in the Great White North Forum under a post called Spot and Stalk from the living room.

My male while not nearly as blood thirsty as the female will decoy them right back to my lap and seems to like watching them get wacked. He will engage a coyote or anything for that matter but can be called off it easily if I want. He won't quit on his own but I can get him to come.

Rolly ( from the other post)- I post under DTOM on most forums, but I must confess I'm still in the "Lurk and Read" mode for most of the terrier sites. I just got a couple Jagd pups so I'm really fresh to terriers and terrier talk. I've been using my time to read and trying not to post questions that have been asked a 100 different times. I'd love to join you on a hunt in SD. When do you want me? LOL.

Anyways I look forward to hearing and seeing your cross.

Tim

Rolly , I think you and I are on the same page.I needed a colder nose and alittle more voice in my dogs ,so I outcrossed a Catahoulla stud to a cold nosed Black and tan Dam.I have the pups up for sale,(to help cover my feed bill)but the $ weren't the reason for breeding.I am keeping at least two pups for me maybe three.I would like to be running only my own bred dogs as I start to replace the older dogs.I will trade a pup from time to time for fresh blood. But my longterm goal is to run only my own bred dogs.
If you get this breeding done,I do want one of those dogs for a hole dog. That is the one thing I am missing in my program.
