what's the best coyote rifle?

Can't argue with that choice. I've got the same rifle chambered for .243. Love that gun /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif .It's lay to rest a lot of pesky varmits in the 4 years I've had it. Seldom leave home without it. Good luck in your choice of guns.

You opened a can of worms on this one! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
Everybody has their own opinion, but I like my Colt competition II HBAR AR-15 then there's my Rem. 700 classic in 22-250 then there's my contender pistol. Fact is I find a new favorite every time I open my safe, so do yourself a favor don't limit yourself to just one, buy em all!
Good hunting

Lots of variables here, caliber? If you plan on doing alot of shooting, which I think is a real good idea, because the more familiar you are with you gun and its capabilities, the more right the gun is for the sport, does this make sense. 223, cheap ammo and a ton of different loads to find out what is accurate for your gun. But if you are hunting only fox, maybe to much gun, if your calling is thick areas, maybe a 12gauge, with 3 1/2" capabilities. Personally I like the 223, 22-250 and the best optics I can afford. But my work gun is a Savage 24F, 223 top barrel and 12gauge bottom, kind of the best of both worlds, except for doubles at 70yds, then you are limited. Just pick a gun you can shoot alot, to get comfortable with and work on getting as accurate as possible with it. My 24F will shoot inside 3/4" at 100yds, but it took alot of time and powder to determine bullet seating depth and type and speed to get it there, and I would not have done it with loads that cost me alot. Work on technique, shoot from every position you can from the ground, critters very seldom come in from that 45 degree angle left of center. Calling is a shooters sport, and the object is to take what you call, not 30%, not 70%, but 100%, when you start closing in on this number you have the right gun, and have practiced enough, personally I have done this game for alot of years and still have not practiced enough. Hope this helps.

These guys all know what they are talking about. But if you are like me you do'nt want to spend 500.00 on a varmit gun ( wish I could.) Look at the New england Firearms handi rifle. This comes in .223 or .243. I've got the .223 and it works well on coyotes, coons and cats. It is a single shot but it reloads about as fast as my other bolt action rifles. It is light ( about 7lbs with scope ) I need that because I carry ecaller and other equipment and I like to move alot. Just give this little gun a look for 220.00 you can't go wrong. Gary

It's mine and it's fer sale.

(sorry guys i just couldn't help it)

Man this is could be hard. I love my nef 223 bull barrel and my mossberg 835 ultimag is great in close quarters. Im still waiting to draw blood with my new savage 111 chambered in 22-250.

My Barrett .50 cal is what I like to take out the most. Hahahah just joking my Armalite AR-15 for general use. If shots over 400yards are expected I grab ny Ruger M77 MarkII 300win mag.

Now that is the most accurate and honest statement I've seen here in a long time.

I don't know anyone who kills all the animals they call in. Two weeks ago, we called 104 in 6 days, killed 20. I guess I don't practice enough.

I use a .223 cheap and deadly and a joy to shoot. Fur friendly and no recoil. You can see the hits in your scope.
Good optics and a gun you can shoot, will make a lot of difference. There are a lot of opinions here, but it still comes down to the rifle you can shoot the best and that you like. If you can't stand the gun, you won't shoot it.

My vote would be for the .223. I shoot a weatherby .223 and love it to death! I have found that I don't give up all that much (in real life) to the 22-250. My barrel lasts longer because it isn't shooting such a hot load and there is a whole pleathera of ammo to chose from.

I also love the old trusty 870 wingmaster sawed off to aboiut 20 inches for my up close and personal gun...4 buck to bb will do nicely!

Shot twomore tonight! Yeeha jesters dead......

I just traded my Mini 14 off. In return I got a brand new NEF Ultra Varmint .243 Bull barrell and a Simmons Aetec scope brand new.

Good deal or not???????

oh come on guys....lets face it, we all love our guns....but ya have to admit.....your favorite is anything that goes "BANG" and pushes a projectile out the front of it, with the abitilty to knock down a yote or a fox.. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif .... at any distance!!!....there are alot of varibals in this question!!!...just find one that fits, and get really close to it, make it your new best friend!!!... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif ....dont forget to tuck it in every night!!!!...oh and a kiss makes it feel really special /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

"you must become one, with your guns"

SHOOT STRAIGHT!!!!

ok i cant stand it i haft to cast my vote..colt competition hbar ar-15...man i love that gun..
For up close i use rem 1187 shotgun with a kicks choke tube....#4's.

I started out using a Ruger MKII target in 22-250 with a Nikon 6.5X20. I have killed a bunch of coyotes with it. I still use that rifle on occasion. I then bought a Remington Sendero in 25-06 and had my gunsmith tune it up a bit. I put a Remington Tactical 4.5X14 on and I have killed a bunch of coyotes with this rifle. I still pack that rifle on occasion. I have a buddy that carries a little Sako in .223. He is a gunsmith and he built the Rifle himself. It has a beautiful custom English walnut stock that he hand checkered himself. It also has a skinny 22" Shillen barrel. The gun weighs almost nothing. I got jealous watching him carry that little Sako around while I was packing my heavy barreled Ruger and Remington rifles around so I bought a sporter weight Remington model 700 in 22-250. it sits in a dark brown HS precision stock. I put a Nikon 6.5 X 20 on it and the trigger is set at about 2 lbs. I now carry that rifle more than any other for calling coyotes because it is easy to handle while shooting and it's easy to carry. It doesnt shoot quite as well as my other two coyote guns do off the bench but it is alot easier to carry around.

Thunder34 One thing to consider is your height. I am 6'3" and a remington is the only gun that fits me properly. Make sure that what ever gun shop that you go to that porperly fit you with the firearm. Rugers, Winchester, Savage you may have to use thick recoil pads to get the proper length. Make sure that your face is not to far forward on the cheek piece, or the recoil may force the scope into your face. This becomes especially important if you plan to shoot prone any. A good rule of thumb is to place the recoil pad in the bend of your elbow and see where your finger is in relation to the trigger. You want the first joint of your finger to rest on the trigger. Hope this helps.

I have a ruger 220 swift, I love it too it's so fast you dont have to lead coyotes on a dead run and the bullet will be in the coyote before you here the bang. I has a laminated stock and heavy barrel, Three step safty and 55 grain bullets.

If you are not saving the fur then I think the gun you enjoy carrying and shooting the most is your best coyote rifle.
If you are saving the fur then it has to be any lightweight .223. Plenty of power and factory ammo very inexpensive so you can shoot a lot.
I have owned a few .223's over the years, Howa, Savage, Remington, they were all accurate, the light ones just as coyote accurate as the heavy ones.
My current favorite is .223 NEF light rifle, rifle weighs 5.5 lbs and has a 2 x 8 Leupold on it. I just got it this year and so far in two outings I have called in 4 coyotes (that I saw) and killed 4 coyotes with it, can't complain about that!
