Whats with the moon phases?

Hey every one.

So I know there are no hard and fast rules here, never are. But, I used to read that the full moon phases were good times to be out calling. Then I just read that the dark phase was the better time for success.

I haven't been doing this long enough to notice too many patterns yet.

Just wondering what all you experienced guys have noticed?

Thanks for any advice!

for day time calling i have done good in a full moon phase, dark moon phase and every phase in between. done no good in all those phases also. do not pay much attention to the moon.

i can see where it might make a difference when night hunting.

As a general rule of thumb, during a full moon, we had best just before the moon rises, then between 10am to 3pm.

High density population trumps all.

When we were hunting in Mexico during a full moon, we were blanking on stands time after time. I blew a howler, and coyotes were 360* around us for as far as you could hear, very, very high population. None would come in.

I got with Bill Austin and learned how to howl, we started having more success just using howlers.

Field and Stream has a table with Major and Minor feeding periods, use this in conjunction with weather for best success.

Thanks guys.

I have read other posts on here and it seems to just vary. Oh well, I guess I will just have to hunt ALLLL the time, what a drag!

My experience has been EXACTLY what Slick said. Maybe the moon plays a part in coyote hunting but I have not seen it as a factor.

I've spent a lot of time trying to understand how the solunar tables translate into major and minor activity times. I still don't get it, but I do think there is something to it.

Fortunately, with the arrival of smartphones and Google Play and Apple App (if you must) stores, you don't need to figure it out. You just need to download the app and plan your hunt around the predicted activity times.

This is the one I have and I like it lot for my purposes.

Google Play

Activity times are displayed in a bar graph, with each bar representing one hour during the day. The pink bar is the current time when you access the app. It shows sunrise/sunset. Moonrise/Moonset and current Moon phase.

I played around with a couple others, but none of them were as good as this one.

Well we do a bunch of moonlight hunting on the snow, and after a a good night of night hunting the coyotes are pretty lazy during the day.

They tend to lay around and don't seem very interested.

I rather not hunt the day when its full moon, but still do.

I realize that Coon hunting is different than hunting predators... But, we don't run dogs for coon on moon lit nights. Or at least try to run before the moon is up or during clouds.

The lack of coon movement would suggest to me that the hunters are out and eating.
