A buddy went out the other night. We have 12'' of snow its on the loud side walking. He started with a howl. Coyote stood up 420yds away cross wind on the neighbors and challenged him and started going nuts, this dog went on going crazy for 45 min. By buddy just sat to see what it would do. It never budged. He asked what I would of done. I told him to cut distance, but the snow was loud, kind of bright out with the snow. His only option would of been to swing 400 yds to the down wind side but that might of been impossible with out spooking it. He threw out some pup distress still wouldnt budge. No way to get access to the neighbors property, he is the kind of guy that pays his neighbors off so no one can deer hunt around his many properties.

Depends on what you mean by “Going nuts”.

Could be booger barking which is what they do when you’re busted or they are very suspicious of what they’re hearing. I would back out in that case because it’s rare that they break. You just educate them further by calling.

If a visual and they’re challenge barking and kicking up the ground etc. that would be a more territorial situation where getting closer could pay off big. However, it doesn’t sound like that is a good option in this case. Probably still best to back out.

Just my opinion.

I agree he said it was definety challenging. I asked him if it was warning barking, he said it did bark some. Hard telling without hearing it.

could it have been in a trap ?

best bet like others have said, leave and come back another day.

that being said, one fall night, we had a pair answer us from across the road. they walked out into the field and barked and howled then laid down and went to bed.

it took us awhile but cut the distance down to 200 yards or less and put both of them to sleep :)
