I was told that the American govt bought 1 Billion rounds of ammunition last fall. Any truth to this?

No, in total they bought 4 billion rounds spread over the next 5 years.

I normally don't use public ranges, other than to teach
classes at. Last week I had an instructors meeting, and
took a couple of rifles and my chrony along, since my range
is buried under 1-2 feet of snow yet. There were guys at
the range, shooting away. One had a new RRA AR-15, and
one guy had a 17 HMR, and both seemed to have plenty of
ammo. And there were a couple of shooters on the pistol
range, making empty 9mm cases. There are signs this is
easing.

And Swift One, your plans for an apocalyptic world, scrounging
ammo from "preppers", has flaws. The tactics you described,
will have me picking through your pockets, as you turn cold.
Not to say all "preppers" are really prepared beyond supply
caches, but if you pick the wrong one, with your observe and
assault tactic, you may not live to do the assault. History
is full of overwhelming forces being defeated by superior
tactics. I do agree that fixed fortifications are testimonials
to the stupidity of man, but don't assume they are easy
single dimension targets. They can be like peanut butter to
a mouse, ON A MOUSE TRAP.

To come extent i agree Will1947, in the winter i shoot handgun in the indoor range. Now i can go anytime during the week days, that is, and not have to wait for a lane. finding others 9mm brass is always a treat also. Not always laying around like it used to be.

Uhh, ya, once again my fiend, that was an observation from me based on how I have seen and heard about how some of the preppers planning to defend their caches. Not my intentions to go on home invasions. But, I bet it would happen with other groups of nefarious people.

This statement by itself without even knowing anything about me has a serious tactical flaw- your over confidence and assuming. You should always assault and/or defend from your enemy as if it's the most terrifying and worthy opponent that you have or ever will came up against. I may or may not be anything- but you don't know that and should treat it as such. Just saying. Your comment alone would cause me to act out violence (in self preservation) on you (if I had a chance to) like your were the devil himself if we crossed paths in such a world- based purely on fear and the will to want to survive. BTW, that is in no way a threat to you or anything- just a hypothetical situation.

I am not an advocate of the "apocalyptic world" because I am a believer that we will get through this rough time without ending up there. Like I said before though failure will visit the stupid. I am not stupid. My plan just doesn't involve staying in one place and playing castle. Mostly becuase of my geographical location- I would be right in the middle of the sh*t. Look up the location of LaPorte County, IN- Specifically Westville, IN and you will see why. The advantages of living in the great western wide open states are nice. I dont have those advantages.

220 swift, that pic makes my mouth water!!!

Hodgdon has been busy. Good to see some of it landing on
loading docks. Now hopefully the bullet guys will start
making some head way against the panic.
