Where can I find a Mountain Cur

I am going to be moving in about a month or so and I want to get a hunting buddy for my lab/husky mix. He likes squirrels and coons so I figured a Mountain Cur would be a pretty good choice. I don't know much about them or where to find one. A buddy of mine said to get a mix cur and maybe a russell. I wouldn't mind a smaller dog- save on feed. My lab mix will settle between 65-70 pounds so I don't think I want another big dog. Any help would be very appreciated.

my guess would be the mountains..... just kiddin. im pretty sure Tony Tebbe had a mountain cur mix pup for sale on his website.

Don't know where you can find a pure "Mnt cur" right now, but I have catahoulla x cur x walker pups in the pups for sale thread. These will be about 60# males, smaller females. This is a proven cross (3rd time). Might work for ya, take a look. 1 male, one female left as of today. They are 6 weeks old.

If you picked up an issue of Full Cry or American Cooner, you'd have a boatload of avenues to explore. Mt. curs, fiests, treeing cur mixes, etc. and prolly quite a few that would be close to you in Indiana...

But if you were considering having a pup shipped from out of state, Dasher has a puppy post three down from this one Those pups are 7/8 Striker bred Mt. cur and 1/8 Kamphouse Plott from hunting lines and should dang sure have some tree in them! There are several guys on the board here with, what I call "Dasher dogs", myself included. Having Evan put a pup on an eastbound Delta flight will cost a couple bucks, no doubt, but I'm sure glad I did, cuz my little squirt has turned into a literal treeing machine.

But like I said, there should be a good supply of squirrel/coon dogs right close by to you in Indiana that would be a heckouva lot more convenient and cost effective for you to get your hands on...

Good luck & have fun!

Where are you moving too? There are three very good guys mentioned already. If you are moving anywhere near these guys, maybe you could stop in and see their operation and get a good hands on experience.

Good luck with your quest for a pup, I have enjoyed mine.

I just had a guy contact me with 4 pups. I know nothing about them but can get some pics of the pups and parents if you're interested.

Thanks for all of the replies guys. I agree with the looking around locally. I will Either be in the northern 1/3 of Indiana of the middle 1/3 of Illinois. I put an ad up on a local website and someone replied with a guy by the name of Randy Wolfe to look him up. I called him today and he invited me out to hunt/ talk a walk in the woods with his two pups and other full grown dogs. I am going to go within a few weeks. I can't get a dog until after I move but it sounds like this guy might have what I am looking for well within what I wanted to spend. I will put up some pictures if all things go through.

Any time you can hunt over the parents, you are ahead of the game.Take him up on the offer. Good luck with your choice.

I went to see the pup Saturday. He didn't have the parents, but an aunt I guess. Randy Wolfe is a really nice guy, a little rough around the edges, but I would hunt with him. Pending job offer, I am going back to get the little female. I've never trained this kind of dog but I'm excited to learn. Her name is Freckles.
