Where do you get your turning wood?

I buy about 90% of my wood on E-bay. Just be careful that you don't turn into a wood junkie like me. I've probably got close to 40 species of wood on hand right now.

I scrounge some here locally from tree trimmers. Some of the prettiest wood comes out of the crotch pieces that most people don't like to split for fire wood. I buy scraps from a local guy that makes gun stocks. I'll bet that some of the blanks he uses are worth more than my house payment. Talk about some incredible figure in walnut.

Our city has recycling yard waste drop off sites that I've got some nice wood from such as honeylocust, bur oak, sumac, buck thorn, spalted mountain ash, and numerous others. Sometimes I wish I lived a little farther south, so I could get my hands on some of that mesquite or osage orange. Then again, I'd probably wish I was back here with our big fluffy pale coyotes........Dale

When it comes to wood, it ought to be called Crap Supplies USA.

With that said, I have gotten some beautiful wood from them. Two pieces. Out of about 200. I gave up.

If you want good wood you will have to pay for it.

Bellforest is OK.

Glimmer Wood is very good

Internet Lumber is good too

Exoctic Lumber Inc is very good too

Righteous Hardwoods has some nice stuff, be very careful of the burls, they are not too good

Goosbay Sawmil has some nice wood too.

(both Goosebay and Righteous Hardwoods are within driving distance for me and I visit them often and can vouch for their lumber)

I will be carrying turning squares on my site also, including dymondwood squares, when I finally get it finished, sometime around 2019 or so the way things are going.

Look for sawmills in your area, and hardwood flooring places. Sometimes you can find a goldmine close to home.

If you have a WoodCraft or Rocklear store near you, they will be able to point you in the right direction. Both of them also carry wood but they can be very expensive for unremarkable woods.

I dont make calls but I have turned wood with my father and put a few knives together with wood handels. I would suggest any of the places suggested here so far but never forget to keep an eye out for anyole scrap of wood. I made some beautifulle handels on some patch knives and I got the wood from a crate that held machinery from Japan. I have no idea what kind of wood it is "kind of a cross between mohagany and walnut" but man did it turn out pretty. Wish I still had one so I could take a few pics. My point ya never know what your gona get till you finish and a cheep ole piece of scrap can turn into a masterpiece. besides that its good practice
