Where to find Yellow-Bellied Marmots in the Rocky Mountains?

I know rock piles and boulder fields.

Other than that, Has anyone found any rhyme or reason why you can find rock chucks in one promising location, but not another?

Do they favor south slopes over north? Certain altitudes? What do you think?

Thanks

........ They just get all shot up in the areas that are easy to get to.

Seems like the further I go( away from civilization) to find them, the more I find.

It's really hit or miss finding them, even the same spot on consecutive years. You just have to spend time scouting. Not a bad pastime, considering the scenery!
It helps to be fit enough to walk some distance from the 4x4. Maybe only over the closest ridge to the next basin.

Just remember Colorado DOW has classed them as a "game animal" so there is a season and a limit of two per day.Oh yeah and you are suppose to take them home for consumption, [beeep] bunnyhuggers.

I've found them in unexpected places. Also not found any in places where they should've been. Go by rough idea and they'll just be wherever they are.

What Ackman said. I'm starting to figure out that creeks are really good areas to find them at or around. The highest concentration of rockchucks we have found have been around creeks. Also alfalfa fields, but there's probably not too many of them in the rockies. I never seen any on red colored rocks, or white rocks. I'm not sure why.

I used to pursue them quite a bit and hope to again this year. There is a short season on them in CO--8/10-10/15. Mostly u have to hike for them to treeline and above in CO. Tried to kill some with my recurve last year and screwed up my knees--

The signature in your post tells it all for marmot hunting. That spot in my last pic was helll too get to, but there were a bunch of them up there, and on the opposite slope from a different trail--2 hour hike from the end of the 4-WD trail. Specialty pistols are tailor-made for this as they just slide right into/on the pack.
