Going to be starting a build on a custom 7mm STW this winter and wanting to get a custom barrel done for it. This is my first build I've done so I have no idea who to go through?

Nother question is how does it work? Do I send him my action and he then fits the barrel to the action or?

Any help would be apperciated,

Luke

Luke, the last 2 I had done were done by Greg Young at Southern Precision Rifles In Naples, FL:

http://www.bugholes.com/

He does great work for a reasonable price, and he keeps a lot of barrels from Rock, Brux, and Obermyer in stock.
You can pick one of his barrels, ship him your action, and get your barrelled action delivered right back to your door.

His wait time is a LOT less than some of the others too.

Macs Guns in WY does great job. Iv got 2 builds from him and going for another one. The best would be Kirby Allen send lots of money and about 2 years to get it.

Kevin Weaver or Bob Green come to mind.
Lots of good smiths out there. Do your homework and then talk to some. A phone conversation is always more telling than a price list on a web-site.

Most important in my mind is to pick the bullet you want to use before anything. That'll dictate your twist and lead.

Several of the premium barrel makers will do the job too, but again, pick your bullet and then send em dummy rounds to set the lead with.

Biggest problem with a premium barrel is, you'll never be satisfied with factory again.

I would recommend a trip to your local shooting club on a NRA highpower or F-Class leauge. Talk to the guys local to you, and find someone in your area. Usually the guys shooting competition will sort out the hacks from the good ones in a hurry.

Other than that, start thinking about what weight bullets you want to be shooting. Pick a twist that will maximize the potential in the bullet range you are looking at. Another thing, if you want to shoot the really heavy bullets you may have to short throat the chamber to get your loaded rounds to fit into the mag box.

Short action customs, bugholes, kampfeld, kevin weaver and beanland have all been good to me. Alot depends on how long u want to wait.

Chad Dixon is about as transparent of a smith there is. If you ever have a full build done you can watch it being done over on snipers hide. His company is longriflesinc. He has treated me very very well. Like people say there are a lot of good smiths out there, but on the flip side there are some hacks. Do your homework and don't necasarily let price dictate the smith. You usually get what you pay for.

for as far as what bullet I was either goin to go with 162gr A-max or 160 gr accubond?

From what I've been told a 1-9" twist would be best for this weight class?
