I have a gun I am getting and would like to know where to shoot a fox at with a .223. bullets are either going to be a v-max 50 gr or a 55gr soft point. I also have 52 grain hollow points but not sure if they will work good or not.

that is zactlly what I thought. just try to shoot them straight on. also what is the best type of bullet to use on a fox that won't rip em in half?

Between the eyes would leave a small hole. At the base of the neck. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I have shot my fair share with a 222 and 223 but will take the 17HMR out to a 100-150 yards if you want to skin them. My reds shot with the 17HMR make the fur buyer /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif but the fur check for non damaged goods really makes me /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif My 17 has a special place in my heart for the fox but is to light if you are in an area with many coyotes.

I've shot fox straight on in the chest with the 223. They were fine. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif I mean the fur was fine. the rest of the fox was very dead. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif Others I've seen shot broadside weren't damaged badly either. like any caliber, it depends on the area hit and the distance from the shooter.

I just got a russian made o/u .223/12ga. I bought it because the last three stands that I have called in something I had the wrong weapon in my hands. it started out with the first gray of the season came in and stopped on a rockpile. as soon as I found him in the scope and was about to put a .17gr vmax outta the hmr in hi he kept moving /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif. the next stand I had a coyote go about 70 yds downwind (wind would gust that way once in a awhile other then that it was calm) and sit. this with the 12ga. next was a gray fox in the mountian that peeked outta some brush at about 70 yds with the shotgun again. could had him easily with a rifle. so know I don't have to worry about it. Anything within 40yds will get the 3" copperplated BB'S. anything else gets a bullet if it gets stubborn. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

BigBen,

I am shoting the Black Hills .223 w/ the v-max bullet and love them. I shot for the vitals and it leaves a hole the size of a 1/2 dollar most of the time on exit, but if I hit the shoulders......WOW........that is a horse of a differant color, big holes!

GOOD LUCK!

if you are concerned with not blowing them up, go with the 55 grain softs. Those v-max bullets are a special little unit and you have to love them if you don't mind pieces and parts. The most important part, either way is you need to hit them in the ribs.
