Where to start lookin for KY bobcats

Can any of the other KY boys point me in the right direction to look for bobcats? I've called several times up in Daniel Boone on the Bath/Menifee cnty line with no luck so far. The last one I killed I lucked up on up in Estill cnty and was thinking about trying up there this weekend. I don't want to know where your honey hole is but a general direction to start my search would be really helpful. Thanks, Ted

Say Ted, If your coming up to Estill Co. this weekend, give me a call. I live in Irvine and know the whereabouts of a cat or two. I'm no expert, but I've had some success with Bobcat's. Several coyotes inhabit the same area also, so you never know. You can get me at 606-723-0260.

Look for cat's around railroad beds, they often walk the rails looking for game on each side of the often grown up right of ways. Open pastures or fields that border heavy thickets are also a good place to look, cat's roam the dense thickets for small birds and rodents. Rocky ridges that parallel the railroad are another good place.

Set up close to these thickets on the woods edge, Bobcat's don't like to come directly out in the open. Once saw one crawl on it's belly accross an open field, then once on the other side he just stood up and walked away. (the season wasn't in at the time.) Use a decoy that moves if possible, and look really, really close at everything. Hope this is some help to you. kyray

Kycoyote,

Clear cuts are very good places to find bobcats. Any rocky out croping with good cover is good to. Old growed up fields that are thick or real thick creek bottoms are good to. We take a few cats in Ky but most of them come out of clear cuts. Make your stands longer than normal to. If I know there is a cat there I may stay on stand for 60 min, 30 min being a short stand for cats here. They like the growed up creak beds to. Just about any thick cover. We hit alot of spots looking for sign and scat. When we find it we set up were we think the cat is staying. They sure can be tough around here.

I've had my best luck with bird/rodent/high pitched calls for cats. The AP6 is hard to beat. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Ray, I'll sure give you a call, maybe tonight. My mothers side of the family is from Irvine, my grandparents lived on old Rt. 2. I've been back up since they died a few times grouse hunting. Mostly just wondering around places that we hunted when I was a kid.
We'll set something up though, I've got the decoy and the e-caller. Ted
