Which $1000 Scope

$1000.00 for a scope! Hmmm....here's my two cents. I'd buy a scope for under half of that and use the rest for ammo or buy another gun. With todays economic and political venue...thats what I would do.

I would get the Leupold VX III Boone and Crockett 4.5x14x40.

With the Boone and Crockett reticle you have very good reference points for 200, 300, 400, and 500 yd shots. Plus it will even save you a few hundred dollars.

I agree. You can buy a fantabulous deer hunting scope for half the price. $1000 scopes are for precision work, IMO. But hey, opinions are like a$$holes, everbody's got one.....

I hunt some in South Carolina and you can hunt 1hr before sunrise and 1hr after sunset. Also a 400 or 500yd peanut or soybean field is common.

Midway USA has these on sale right now...pretty good price and more than you'll ever need on a deer rifle. Save the extra money to mount the monster you shoot at 500yds with this scope /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Actually, this is a better option, as the M1's blow away the standard target turrets and it is also a lighter scope. Buy a VXIII 4.5-14x40 (1" tube) and have an M1 elevation turret added for $89 or both turrets for $130. you can get the VXIII on closeout right now. for around $500 you'll have a killer scope in more ways than one.....

the M1's aren't true 1/4 MOA on a 1" tubed varix III so its a moot point!
If you don't wanna dial get a loopy with a TMR and work out the drops. depending on the caliber you shoot you could use holdover to 500
I sight my 7mm STW in at 3" high at 100 and I'm just over 19" low at 500, so at 500 I hold 12" over the backline and can make a killing shot to 500.

Get the new VXIII and add an M1 elevation dial, if you wish. You will be WAY happy. No need to spend in order to get less......

I'll pass on the B&C and the 50mm.

Give me a 40mm tube, a standard duplex, and an M1 and hold all the BS......

40mm Tube?? Objective maybe? You can get it with the 40mm objective too.

I have a Mark 4 with M1 turrets on my .308 and I love it, when the deer is STANDING. If it is moving, at a long range you have to range it, then you have to dial, then you have to hope it doesn't move more before you can get the shot off. With the B&C it's faster to range, hold, and shoot.

Try aiming at hair and not at air sometime. Not guessing is beautiful thing. Range, dial turrets, kill. No holdover........

Sorry. Edited that.

Anyway, the B&C might be faster, but it is not as accurate. You must know what each designation stands for with given load. 200. 300, 400, 500, only works in Leupold catalog. I also know some guys who can spin turrets pretty quickly.

I don't shoot at critters that are running when they are so far away that I need a rangefinder. I'll wait for them to stop, or get closer.....

I like the Leupolds and would have to agree with 2muchgun. I have the B&C reticle and like it, but under the light conditions you describe it is not the best choice. A standard duplex, heavey duplex, or a German #4 will work better for low light. This will slide you in under a $1000. If you want the best light transmitting coatings that Leupold offers look at the VX-7. Other scopes to consider are the Night Force and Ziess.

I have been running a VXII 4-12x40 German #4 on my 6-06 lately. Sometimes I wonder if it why I cannot get better than 1.5" groups. It covers a good deal of the bullseye @ 100yds. It should still be pretty good for low light hunting, methinks. It still needs to go in for a M1.

I wish Premier still serviced Leupold scopes. They had the #4 right better than anyone, EVER. Would mail them some scopes tomorrow.......
