Which 22-250 should I buy???

I am looking to buy a new rifle and was wondering which Brand do you guys think I should get? I was looking at the Savage Predator Hunter, Ruger or the $500.00 bull barrelled Remington. A guy wants to sell me a Used Remington Sendro in 22-250 for $600.00, is it worth that?

I am wanting a VERY Accurate gun. Also one that will shoot the 52 or 55 grain bullets. So coyotes are more opt to not run off. I would prefer a 220 swift but I can't find one.

I would try to determine how many rounds had been down the tube on the used Rem and what kind of shooting it was. A 250 used for p-dogs may be near the end of it's barrel life (but re-barrelling is an option /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif).

You don't really need a "VERY Accurate gun" for coyotes unless you are planning to shoot them at very long range (600YDs +). Having said that, the Savage will (probably) be accurate out of the box, and the Rem and Ruger can (probably) be made to shoot with a little backyard gunsmithing.

The Rem will have the best re-sale value of the three. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

KilliingCrew, when I started hunting coyotes, I had a predator Master hunter take me under his wing. We hunted almost exclusively in Mexico. We hunted with his gun which was a 22/250 700 Varmint. The gun would only shoot 1 1/2" groups at 100 yards. We killed the heck out of yotes with that rifle! A couple of years later, he wanted me to check the barrel on it...holy cow...no rifling for 1 1/2" down the barrel!!! I checked the speed on the load that we were shooting and the 55g Sierra Flat Base was going 3500 fps!

I bought him a brand new Remington take off Varmint barrel and screwed it on for him, velocity went back up to right at 3700 fps, coyotes from then on had much bigger holes in them!

The Stainless VSSF is worth $600 if the barrel is not shot out. If the guy shoots p. dogs, I would not buy the gun because you are more than likely just buying a stock and an action.

Are you truck hunt'en or walking out making stands off the ground...I wonder why you are wanting a Varmint heavy barrel? Those heavy barrels are hard to swing and heavy to carry around, however I did it on a 22/250 and 6mm Rem.

For what its worth, I like my Encore.
Then you have the option of other barrels too.
Then again, you might want more then one shot....

Out of the box accuracy you can't beat Savage. I have a modef 12fv that is a tackdriver. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowingsmilie.gif

I have a Rem 700 Sendero, a 700 vssf, and a 700 bdl. Also have a brand new Ruger Hawkeye. all are 22-250's. I have only shot the hawkeye 16 times, but I'm believing it may be as good of a shooter as any of the other 3.

I have 3# 22-250s.
1)Encore 24" standard taper, Thumbhole and super tuned.
2)Savage Preditor Hunter, factory stock.
3)Custom Mauser BR, 22-250AI, 25" full bull 1"-10".

The Encore is light and very accurate if super tuned. If you can't tune it I'd say get a savage. The Mauser is more accurate but weighs to much for anything but long range shooting. If you want a 22-250 for predators I'd say consider the savage. If your looking for a rifle for predators and varmints (short medium and long range) then consider the Encore with additional barrels or two rifles. If your only interested in a long range 22-250 you can find good deals at gunbroker.com

+1 for the Ruger HAwkeye in .22/250, I really like mine. It collected two coyotes this past weekend. Shoots accurately with 55grs and is light enough to carry all day. Great handling gun. Integrated scope mounts are nice on it too.

I'd steer clear of the bull barrels. They really get heavy on long walks. Any of the rifles mentioned will do fine on coyotes. My coyote rifle has been a Ruger M77 in .22-250. I have tuned the trigger and floated the barrel over the years and it shoots hand loads sub moa. I like the Savages and Remingtons too. Just don't get something you are going to hate carrying around.

I'll go along with acklyman on the heavy bbl gun. I've got a Rem 700 VLS and it mostly stays in the safe, it's just to heavy to carry to coyote sets. Bought a CZ 527 Varmint in 204 Ruger. 26 inch medium heavy barrel, 7.2 pounds and half inch groups and shoots as flat as any 22-250 I've owned. Great gun to carry or do the ground squirrel thing with. You might take a look at them.

I own two .22-250's. A Winchester 70 Featherweight classic and a Remington 700 SPS stainless. Both rifles shoot under MOA with factory loaded ammo and both are light enough to carry around all day. I have a couple other Remington 700's, and have no complaints with any of them.

I would never buy a used 22-250 without borescoping it first. People tend to shoot low recoil calibers a lot and the barrel life is quite limited. Besides, if you see wear in the barrel, and you will, the price comes down dramatically.

I would also reccomend a lighter barreled 22/250 for hunting coyotes. I own two 22/250s, a Remington 700 BDL I have owned for 35 years. Shot out the orignal chamber 15 years ago and had the barrel rechambered and shortened to 23 1/2 inches in lenght. It shot like a new gun again after being set back. Its light to carry and deadly on coyotes still shoots inch groups with just about any bullet powder combination. My other 22/250 is a custom rifle with a Douglas #5 26 inch barrel and a mauser action. Its a tack driver but just to heavy to pack coyote hunting. It does most of its work over the hood of my pickup at pdogs.

I like my savage and although it is a bit heavy it is a real accurate gun, and you can always say carrying the weight is better than going to the gym..

I've got a T-3 Varmint in 22-250 with a 4-16x40 Bushnell Elite that is extremely accurate with many loads. I would highly recommend it. Never owned a Savage, but know they too are very accurate; my son's 204 shoots tiny groups. Only you can determine which one feels best to you; both very accurate.
