I am looking to buy a .223 rifle for under $500. Been thinking about the Savage Axis or the Stevens 200 but I have seen some others like the Savage 110 TH xp. Was wondering if anyone had any other suggestions? Thanks a lot

I'm just throwing this out there but don't hesitate to look at the used market. It seems that at least in my area a lot of the sky is falling panic buyers are now having to pay back there credit cards. I have seen some really good deals already on some of the sights like utahguns.com and a few others might be able to get a lot of gun for $500 right now

If you are keeping at the $500 range go with the T&C Predator Venture for just a little bit more. The Savage Axis is a awesome accurate rifle as I own both.

The groups being put down with the axis are insane! I don't have one but dang just find some posts on here! How the heck can 300 bucks do that!?

The Axis is a good rifle. I have one in .223. I don't like the stock at the grip, it feels too skinny for me. I also don't like the magazine set up. It works just fine and as much as I hate to say it, it shoots just as good as a couple of my Rems once I trimmed a little off the trigger spring. Easy job(10 minutes). For $278 at Wally World, you can't go wrong. I also have a Rem Tact SPS with a 20" barrel that shoots one ragged 10 shot hole at 100 off the bench. As I recall that was about $450. If you are going to use it for hunting, either is a good choice. I haven't see a Stevens 200 in the store for a long time. I don't own one so I can't comment.

For right around 600 you could get a savage 16 weather warrior. I just bought one in a 204 and can't believe how accurate it is.

I have been super pleased with a wal-mart 700 ADL. Half a turn with an allen wrench on the trigger and perfection. Plenty of options later on and resale good.

I've got the Savage Axis XP Camo Rifle with the Bushnell scope package in a .223 and it's a great shooting Rifle, light easy to carry and very accurate!Got mine on sale for around $369.00 and I'm using Hornady 55 grain V-max bullets.....already out down 2 Coyotes with it so far!

Stevens is based on the Savage 10 action I believe. I have the 200 in .243, and the Axis in .223 & .308. I also just picked up the Ruger American in 7mm-08

Even if you buy just the Axis at WalMart for ~$270, that leaves you with $230 for glass. If you buy the Stevens, then you have about $200 for glass. If you buy the Ruger American, you have about $100 for glass.

Of course, those numbers are less after tax and NICS.

Good luck!

I would keep a eye on the used racks as well never can tell whats going to turn up there. You might be able to get into a Savage 110 for roughly that price to.

At 500.00 you are limited on what you can get. Not sure why people are so determine to spend so little on such a great investment. It's almost as bad as, someone buying a cooper and then limiting the price of a scope.

Save your money a little longer and don't limit what you want or can buy, just my two cents.

Mossberg MVP that uses the AR15 mags is what Id look at also. Usually around $499 at sports authority.
I run nothing but Savage guns though.

Tikkas are great shooters, I just recently purchased a new t3 deluxe in 270 win. that's a tack driver as was my 25-06 I had and should have kept.
