which 30-06

Hey all, I'm new to the forum and am needing your help choosing between 2 rifles. I've been in the market for a hunting rifle recently and have narrowed the caliber to the 30-06. Mostly because I'm getting into reloading and have heard that the round is time honored and versatile. I'll be hunting in the west for deer sized game up to elk. I wanted a bargain rifle and my local gun shop owner has a couple for me to choose from, both in 30-06. The choices are: A gently used Savage 111DM(don't know how I feel about detachable mag.)Synthetic stock and matte blue barrel. It's an older version so no accu-trigger.
The second choice is an older Winchester 721 never been fired. It's got a walnut stock and blue barrel. Can't find much on this one, but the store owner told me that it's a bargain rifle based on Winchester's model 70.
Thanks in advance for the help and suggestions!

I have the savage 111 in 30.06 and I love mine the detachable mag. Is nice especially if your moving from stand to stand. And its a savage so you really can't go wrong there. Just make sure you put decent glass on it t.e Simmons that came no mine was garbage.

The 670 was made from the late 60's to the late 1970s. NON pre-'64 push feed action. I think it came in a couple of different barrel lengths. It's not worth a lot of money, even unfired, but I'd still take it over the Savage. I've known several Winchester push feed models to be not worth a lot, but excellent shooters. Either way, I'd still say it is worth more than the Savage and will retain better resale value.......

I should have specified; these are my only two choices because it's what my local gun shop has to fit my budget between 3-400 dollars and I know I can get one from Cabelas or something, but I want to buy from this local small business. Thanks for the suggestions so far.

I just learned that the 670 has a birch stock on it. Is this something to consider? Could I replace it down the road if need be? I havn't seen much on stock replacements for the 670 in my minimal research.

for deer an elk it does not matter. they are huge targets. the 30-06 is a great caliber especially for deer and elk. i have three. i loaded and shot 2000 rounds of it last year . since i shoot a lot of game that is smaller like coyote crow fox paper i would need something more accurate. one gun in that price rangeis a remington 700 sps varmint with a 3 to 9 at dicks for 499. 308 243 or what ever. just to find an accurate load in the guns you mentioned will cost you 100$

Ryan,
There are two words that you used to describe each weapon. In describing the first ridle, you used the word, "bargain" and with the second rifle you used the word "older." Do you know the history of either of these weapons or are you only going by price? If the later is the case, how do you know the throats and barrels on these weapons haven't been shot out? If it were me, I'd have someone who knows guns take a look at those things before I'd invest any money in them. Good luck!

Thanks Shynloco, I'll surely take your advice and will probably, now with the suggestions I've been getting, look into a new, affordable rifle like the Marlin XL7 or a Stevens.

Ryan, Cabelas has the Marlin and savages on sale this weekend. both chambered in 30-06, plus there are a few up there in the gun room rack, and you can haggle on the price's up there. the marlin is a "for the price" a darn good gun, and for the price that they are letting them go for this weekend I would seriously consider looking at them. if you do get one let me know and I can send you some load data for our area that has worked great for me over the many years.

Look at the Savages as well, And when I was up there yesterday there was a rem 700 chambered in 30-06. the stock was a little rough but the chamber and rifling looked good. the gun room area has some nice deals over there. Talk to Gary and see what he could find you for the price range that you are looking at.

Thanks BIGGUN, I would surely appreciate the load info. I'll e shopping around for some sort of starter reloading equipment, so I could use some suggestions there also.
