Which AR 10 upper

I am needing an upper for AR 10 in 308. Which one would you guys look at. I want a twenty inch flat top. I'm having trouble locating many with good barrels.

I would look for a light weight upper with a narrow contour barrel if it will be used for hunting. AR10's get heavy, but are very fun. I've had good luck with DPMS and their new AR10 uppers are very light weight.

Check out jsesurplus.com. They carry a lot of dpms stuff, right now they have 20" lightweight barrels in 243, 260, and 308. You'd have to build it yourself, but all the stuff is there.

If you were set on an AR10 platform: I would call dpms and ask them on uppers,

The AR10, 260 Rem is what I would buy if I had to go that route... High BC, lower recoil, flatter shooting- great sectional density. DPMS makes one of those models in a light weight configuration. It is still a beast for receiver though- recoil is like 12 lbs compared to 18 lbs for 308 Win. Rifle weight of 8lbs and that is light for an AR10- add an optic, that is 9lbs. It depends on what you are hunting though. A 308 has punch and power for big hogs / Elk. I like my 458 better than the AR10 I used to have for 200 and under heavy work. It thumps the 350gr Hornady's with authority! It is a lot more compact than the AR10 and easier to carry / stalk with.

I used to shoot a DPMS AP4 Carbine 308 Win many years ago mixed with a G-SSA trigger. It was a tack driver. Once I started shooting 6.8 SPC, I never looked back and sold the AR10. The 6.5 Grendel is also a nice platform to look at. Both handle like a dream compared to a AR10- a "beast". Put a VTAC sling on them for cross body carry and they are very comfortable to stalk hunt / pack with. The AR10 carbine was just too big and bulky for moving around with. The 458 SOCOM is more compact and comfortable for closer heavy hitting work- "terminal performance". YMMV

I own the DPMS in the 260 configuration, my mistake was to get it with the heavy 24" bull barrel and it weights >14 Lbs scoped. So, my advice is if you get the DPMS or any other get the lighter version with a shorter barrel 18-20". My 260 does shoot very sweet and recoil is almost non-existent. I wish there would be story of getting some nice animal, but I don't have any. The reason it's too heavy for our Northern New Mexico Mule deer and Elk hunts.
