Which bullet in a 270 wsm for elk and muledeer

I just picked up a Tikka T3 lite in 270 wsm /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif which I plan to use as a back up (or maybe the 1st choice) elk hunt gun in Oct and as a 1st choice muledeer hunt gun in late Oct. My "1st choice elk gun is a 300 win mag with a 180 Nosler Partition. I will also use it for whitetails in Oklahoma.

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif What reloaded bullet is my best choice, assuming it will shot well? I expect to make some long shots in New Mexico, maybe 300 to 400 yards as I plan to hunt mostly above tree line. I plan to put a 4x12x50 Buckmaster scope on it.

Likewise at what range should I zero or how high at 200 yards.

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowingsmilie.gifThanks guys for your input.

For Elk the 140 or 150 Grn TSX sighted in at 200 yards. For Mulies the 130 Grn JSP should do pretty well. I would go with the 300 for elk though if I had a choice , since you say you will be above tree line you will need the longer range and retained energy.

I've had good results in my .270 Win handloading 160 grain Nosler Partitions and 150 grain Swift A-Frames for elk.

My load of choice for deer, (believe it or not), is factory loaded Federal Premium with 130 grain Nosler Ballistic Tips. On long-range shots, they open up like a more conventional bullet does up close. I once killed a whitetail at 376 yards with a high shoulder shot, and the Ballistic Tip went completely through, leaving an exit wound about an inch and a half in diameter.

Actually, I agree with the 2 gents above me here. I don't know why I'm even posting now, but I guess I will anyways. The 270 WSM is a fantastic cartridge and usually a 130 grainer will do a number on any deer, but if you plan on hunting elk I would jump to the 150 grain class. You should have a better B.C. with a 150 grainer. Both the TSX by Barnes ( Triple Shock ) or the Nosler Accubond are great choices. You might even throw into the mix a Partition by Nosler, it has taken more game than I dare to count. Good Luck

The Barnes TSX, in either 130 or 140gr, will kill both just fine, at whatever range you can properly place the bullet at.

I have used Barnes in my 270Win since 1992. Best big game bullet I've ever used.

In my .270 Winchester I love the 150 grain Sierra GameKIng.
I am certain it would be fantastic in the 270 WSM.

I have a 7mm WSM and I use the 160 grain Sierra GameKings.

I have 2 Tikka T3 LS in 270WSM and use 140gr Accubonds for my big game hunting in Alberta (Elk/moose/bear/mulies/wt/ and the odd coyote/wolf).

Great bullet for this caliber. For the most part - all 1 shot kill with complete pass-thru penetration at various distances. The only time 2 shots were taken was last season by my wife at her bull moose as I did not want the bull to make it into the timber. Distance was 325 metres and both shots were double lung pass-thrus.

Use the 140gr AB with confidence in your 270WSM.

The 150 Partition will not disappoint you from my experience using them in a .270 Win on elk. Excellent bullets. Never have used them, but the TSX look mighty fine also. Elk pack a whole lot more muscle and bone than deer so lean towards a tough bullet.

On the other hand, the last three elk I've killed were with 270 Win with 140 Accubonds and the results were excellent, both at the range and on deer and elk. Of those three Accubonds I used on elk, I recovered one and it retained 75% of its original weight after plowing thru over three feet of elk. The other two Accubonds that I killed elk with exited.

Mighty Peace from Alberta, is that moniker a reference to the Peace River area along the BC-Alberta border area?

I seem to recall that was the area I drove through on the first day up the AlCan north of Dawson Creek 13 years ago. Wow, what lovely country.
