I just got a whirling woodpecker decoy, what are some tips to setting it up and using it with a foxpro? Anyone had a hawk come in and swoop it up and take it?
We used one on Friday and had a nice bobcat sit under it and look up at it infatuated.
You'll see to make the moving wing rotate around you need to situated the bird on the very end of a branch. The problem is the clip that attaches it doesn't clip very well on a thin little feeble branch so I break off the end of branch so I have a little thicker twig to clip it to. The movement of the twirling wing makes the head kinda bob too, which adds to the realism. I am very impressed with the decoy, as simple as it is.
I hang my Whirling Woodpecker decoy from trees and brush when possible using braided fishing line with a swivel in the line. I adjust the line so the decoy is very close to the speakers.
I too use the fishing line for my woodpecker. I hang it up high when I can..I tie a nut at the end of the line. Helps tie the line to thin branches better.
Do bring a couple extra batteries... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
In the old (pre PC) days guys would run wire leader material through the tops of their owl decoys. They'd attach a treble fish hook to the end. When crows dived at the owl decoy they'd get hooked and it would really drive a flock of crows crazy to see that.
I had a barn owl come in take it out of the tree and attempt to fly off with the woodpecker , luckily he dropped it in flight!THAT WAS AWESOME THOUGH! I painted the head on mine bright red like a woodpecker should look and tied fishing line in a swivel around his neck and tied the line to a clip( painted the clip with olive drab) and clip it on a branch over the FOXPRO-XR6. I havent killed a yote or bobcat with it yet!
DOES like to eat batteries, 2500mha last the longest, I charge them each evening.. 4 will normally last a day of calling. I am going to have to buy / make a new Wing soon, mine is looking pretty ragged after a few months of hard use and beating around in a fanny pack. I use it more than my other decoys by far. ~Ace~
i had a hawk and a falcon come in for a closer look on the same stand, but neither one actually swiped it. i really wanna try it in some lowland desert areas ive seen a ton of woodpeckers out in one dove hunting spot that are almost identical in color. i dont see nearly as many in the mountains and high deserts outside of tucson....anyone ever use it with the outfoxed "woody" woodpecker distress call? im thinking it'll be the next call i pick up.
They work well for such a simple device. As a matter of fact I lost mine on Sunday on Cattle Tank road. It must have fallen out of the quad bag or something. If any of you found one out there let me know. They're not too expensive but it still sucks to lose stuff.
For the battery problem in the cold I put 4 new batteries in my pocket with a hand warmer. I put a new one in at each stand They last about 30 min at zero degrees. They still have quite abit of chage in them and after I use them in the decoy I use them in my CD player or LED flash light. I buy 48 packs of the AA alkalines at costco for $10 and that goes along way.

Did not take long for mine to fall off. Seems there was only a couple of spots glued to the arm.
