Whirling Woodpecker Decoy

Order one, you will be happy with it. Do a search of the forums for the mods available. You can do a few simple modifications to the products to greatly increase battery life. I have had animals mezmorized with it.

I am trying something, maybe a waste of time, but I found a Halloween toy bat, battery operated. It is black, flaps its wings and hangs from a string. I will be hot gluing chicken feathers to it, than hang it just high enough to have the flapping wings hit the ground and leaves. I have worked up distress sounds for the MP3 player and mini speaker. Who knows? Igor! More feathers!! I just like tinkering with silly ideas.

Here is my latest decoy, hot from the basement laboratory. This is 12 inches long, with a folded wing span of 11 inches, open wing 18 inches. Can hang from a branch just off the ground or set on a 14 inch PVC 1/2 inch pipe. I do not pat myself on the back for doing super good animated decoys, this is so real looking and pretty, the neighborhood kids want to pet and feed it. But, I remain humble. This runs on two AA batteries and is dolled up with Emu feathers. Flaps it wings and I have made up sounds of squealing, squalling distress horror for the MP3 player. I must stop now, need to feed and pet this new creation and rest my arm.
 
I opened up the woodpecker and soldered a speaker wire across the switch,on the other end attached a speaker plug to plug into my Foxpro accessary jack so it would only run when I press the accessary button on the remote. It works that way pretty well too.

I have an idea that will enhance your decoy. You won't be able to do it til about mid October but here it is...gather up a bunch of real dry leaves maybe the amount of two shovels full and place them right under the wings, so every time it flaps to touch the ground it is making all that rustling noise in the leaves like a critter strugling. Just a thought. You're like me, I like to make and improve things.
 
Hanging it from a tree or brush with fishing line works pretty good. If you are using a e-caller get the decoy as close as you can to the caller or speaker.

Pererjc - thank you, I like that. Are you retired? Can you go hunting on short notice? I would like to try out Peter's Mt., there is an eight mile gated road. I have the keys. I have not been there after the first of this year. Timbering is finished and lots of tops. That is about 20 miles from my house, we could meet at Clarks Ferry.

I got bored today and while sitting looking at my Whirling Woodpecker and Mojo Critter I decided to combine the two. I took a wire coat hanger and cut one arm off,drilled a piece of dowel and stuck it on the coathanger. I then mounted the WW on the dowel and replaced the critter spring with the coat hanger. When I turned them both on the Mojo motor would spin the woodpecker and when the spin cyclce was done the woodpecker would back up about half a turn. I wanted more action so I bent the coat hanger slightly so the Woopecker made a larger circle. Not sure how long the batteries for the Mojo will last but I'm going to put in fresh ones and turn on a timer and see.
