Who is using the 6.8 spc for hogs?

I just got a Dtech upper in 6.8 spc and figure this will be my hog gun once I get my thermal, hopefully by the end of summer.

What bullets have you had the best luck with? I figure on either the 110 or 115 grain range.

Let me know what your experience has been.

The 6.8 SPC is the best AR15 round for hogs IMO. I run 110 grain Nosler Accubonds. I have also had good results with 110 grain Barnes TSX and 90 grain bonded soft points. As a side note I ran some 120 grain SST in a Grendel and it did not perform well for me.

I prefer the 11.25 twist barrels over the 10 twist.

If you are running suppressed go with an adjustable gas block, Kynshot Hydraulic buffer and JP polished spring. It will decrease recoil and make it much easier to recover for follow up shots.

I've been using the 6.8 SPC for deer and hogs for years. My go-to load is the Hornady 120gr SST with AA2200 powder. It's an excellent and very accurate hunting bullet.

Unlike the post above, I've found the 123gr (I believe the 6.5 SST's are 123gr vs. the 6.8 SST being 120gr) SST in the 6.5 Grendel to be just as accurate and effective out of several 6.5G builds I have using 8208XBR.

Because the 120gr SST's have been great, I've not tried any other bullets.

That's correct. Didn't catch the typo on the Grendel bullet weight for the SST. 123 grain.

I will be going suppressed but upper is already built and I will go with it as is. I am going to start with the 110-115 grain bullets to start and go from there.

Just getting into reloading so I have no idea what powder or loads are best for it.

I picked up two boxes of Hornady Black 110 grain vmax at Academy this morning.

Looks like the thermal I am wanting is going to be a long wait based on the places I have checked out.

One dealer told me they were pre sold for the next 7 months.

I recommend starting with AA2200, it's quite popular with the 6.8 crowd, it's all I've ever used in my 6.8 testing.

What twist is your barrel?

First let me address bullets. Hands down on the 120gr SST from Hornady. The 110s and the 115s not so good. As for me this is not so big of a surprise, since I have had experiences with different pistol calibers (of Hornady ) some work OK and some is junk.
Barnes. The 95gr is first choice with 85 second. Nothing else of theirs in this caliber.
Noslers are too much money since it’s best to go with the accubonds.

Powders,,, with the 120gr SST use 2200 WITH a magnum PISTOL primer in a Hornady case. We live in Texas and even in the early fall temps are still hot some days. We get less pressure with the mag pistol primers, than with a rifle primer. I will PM you the load.
8208 is also a good choice for the 120gr SST and it’s not temp sensitive like 2200.
2200 is a ball powder. I use both.
With Barnes 4198 and RE10 or RE7 Barnes open up good and you will need velocity
Ultimately your rifle will tell you what it likes.
The Noslers can take H322 or 8208 but there again rifle will talk to you.
I do like Noslers and lost count of how many hogs taken with my 260 and the 140gr. Partition. I haven’t used any Noslers in my 6.8 since finding the Hornady 120s.

I run two along with a .308. One is a Stag barrel and it likes AA200 and the other is a White Oak Arms barrel and it likes Ramshot Exterminator. I run a cheap Speer 100 gr. hollow point in both to keep the fps up as much as possible. Never had one run with a shot behind the ear and they don't go far with a shoulder shot if they are not too big.

My son built a 6.8 not long ago and followed Gman’s advice on the ARP 11.25 twist barrel. We just got back Sunday from a southern hog hunt where he dropped 7 hogs with 120 gr. SST’s. They were small hogs, good eating size, and all dropped right there. The bullet performed well. The only one I got was with a 6.5 Grendel / thermal and 100 gr. Sierra HP head shot. I plan to post a video once I get it done. I think you’re going to like the 6.8, Yellowhammer.

On the adjustable gas block it helps to not only work with the buffer but also you can adjust it to make your suppressor a little quieter.

A real shame that I destroyed another phone. I had pics of the first 4 hogs taken this year with the 6.8 and the 120 gr SSTs. A lot of damage even on double shoulder shots taken at 120-130yds.
