Why does pup in distress work?

I got my second coyote last weekend, and he came in running to a pup in distress sound. I was wondering why he came into that sound. Is it to kill the pups and get rid of competition, or did he come to help the pups? Will females come into it too? I hope to bring another in with it this weekend. Thanks! PD

maternal or paternal instinct. to see what's eating junior or maybe in hopes that junior is having a hard time with a meal and they will help finish the job. could be to kick some butt, if it were another coyote giving it the business. they don't know what's going on so it could be curiosity as well. let's just say it varies.

I use Puppy sounds in November here in S Africa when pups are out of dens, works well, call in females as they think a puppy is in trouble or even young dogs as they think their brothers want to play! works well. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

a pup in distress is still a distressed animal. also dureing breeding season males will run any canine out of the territory. im not a coyote, i dont know what they think, but id like to think they are smart enough to realize the voice they hear is not from they're pack, but who knows. as long as it works keep it up!

Give this a try: Download an audio of crying babies then take it to the mall and play it out of your FoxPro. I bet you there's more than a few Moms who come-a-runnin! Also, if you and I got in an argument at the bar and decided to "take it outside" I bet there's more than a few guys who'd come out to watch me get me a$$ kicked!
I think they're both pretty much the same thing as a Coyote that comes in to a Pup Distress call...they want to find out what's going on. I use pup sounds with great effectiveness all year long, in my opinion it's the best sound there is. *qb

Pup distress works, because they are sharp, loud distressfull crys, that stimulate the coyotes curiousity, like any other distress sound. Whether or not they actually associate it with coyote young crying, who knows? If they were that sharp, one could assume they would also know the distinct cry of their own pup....not the neighbors, and in turn not respond? No one knows for sure.

I second ChileRojo on this. After i read his thought i would also believe its a curiosity trigger, but when you shoot one then play the sound i believe they believe its ther buddy screemin, whether its a pup cry or a rabbit cry

i 2nd with quarterbored if i heard someone gettin a butt kickin i would go see what was going on. or the whole ma in the mall thing works too.
