WI bans bait for deer

Not a predator issue exactly, but due to the CWD found in southern WI all baiting for any reason for deer has been banned. Still legal for bear, as long as it isn't accessible to the deer. Seems to me that will mean more deer, since a large number are shot over bait, hence more coyote bait. What are your thoughts on coyotes taking deer? Do they really put a dent in the population, or is that just an excuse for unsuccessful hunters. There seem to be a large population of coyotes right now here in Northern WI - I hear them in my fields and ravines almost every night. Oh, that reminds me, if you are in the area I'd be glad to take you out for a hunt. I'm still learning, but I've got the yotes if you've got the experience. E-mail me if you're interested.

about time they banned that baiting in wisconsin, i went to the cwd meetings and that was the first thing i wanted them to do was change the baiting restricytions. Im sure glad they did.

The baiting restriction is to try and keep from concentrating deer, since CWD is thought to be spread from nose to nose contact, or mucus and saliva that would contaminate feeding stations. This is thought to out weight the benefits of luring the deer out to be shot. Within the erradication zones, I have heard that any means are legal including spotlighting. If this is the case baiting becomes a mute point.

nope i hunt in the eraddication zone and for right now all they are doing is letting you hunt one week per month for either sex deer and fawns. There was tlak about spotlighting them but then the dnr was afraid that there might be poorly palced shots and wounded deer running raround all over the place which is exactly what they dont want. They are being very strict here about it, on the little pamphlet thing they gave me it says only take shots that you are 10% sure will drop the deer in it tracks. that is stupid cause thats what all good hunters hope to do anyway in my opinion. I hunted the fitst season of it and it was super hot. I ddint see any deer to shoot but my friend (son of the landowner) got a shot at a doe but he missed her. They even told us that the deer have to be shot in the chest and no where else. I sure hope this dosent sppread to other areas of wisconsin and other states. Im sure doing my aprt to get rid of this but i wish everyone would jump on board insead of fighting the dnr on this issue.

Yotes make little or any impact on the deer population. Mostly they help clean-up road kills. The ban on feeding is the best thing they could have done in this state. Not only will it help spread out the animals to a more natural density, but it will also cause a whole generation that has been raised to kill game over a bait pile to learn to hunt. As sportsmen that hunt we should be doing all we can to back the DNRs efforts to eradicate CWD from the state.
