Wildcat caliber

What is your favorite wildcat caliber? Something that plain out performs awesome for coyote hunting, prairie dogs, or just really whops the steel plate.

My favorite at the moment for coyotes is the 20-250 with 55 grain Begers.
Also like the 17 TAC and 22-243 AI.

For squirrels and chucks 20 TAC, 20 VarTarg, and 17 Hornet

22 Creedmoor, 22 XC, 22x47 Lapua for the 22 variant
Though all are very common 6 Dasher, 6x47 Lapua, 6x284 for the 6mm variant
There are a ton of different wildcats out there but some are easier to obtain components for which I am finding out on my 22x47 Lapua build.

I keep it as simple as possible and run a lot of BR case rifles. Usually reasonably high performance for anything that isn't super heavy for caliber.

Hmmm, well, you said favorite not favorites so I'll assume I only get to pick one.

For me, it'd have to be one of the hot rod 6mm's and since it's so darn easy, almost to easy to be considered a wildcat round, I'll have to go with my 6-284.

If you have a 6 DTI then you're wasting your time trying to find a better wildcat for this kind of shooting. I shoot a 6 WOA and the velocity is the same for all practical purposes. Mine is a bolt action, has a Harrell's brake and I can almost shoot a group without repositioning the gun. I have seen every hit that it has ever made.

I was thinking the same. I just built a 243 lbc which gives nearly identical ballistics to those two and I'm convinced it will become my all around go to.

The 6X6.8 is a proven hammer on coyote and medium game. Case forming is a snap with excellent bullet choices and dies available from a couple of sources.

I have three AR's and a Savage. They are tack drivers.

My 6mm international, (6x250 long neck) will run 70's at 3500 with 36 grn 748. I would think a short neck AI could gain 10% over that.

Little different flavor - 357/44 B&D Mag. While it's not a long distance coyote rifle cartridge, it's an absolute ball shooting steel at 200-250yrds with a revolver. The trajectory is flat enough, it's almost too easy. I've only taken it out a few times after coyotes, but I'm hoping I can get coyotes and deer past 250yrds with it, just gotta get myself more consistent at hitting 6" plates at 250 on a cold shot.

Oh man that is a hotty in a revolver!! I shot one years ago during my IHMSA days. It was ram slamming piece of gear when I shot it.

22-204 with 40gr NBT's at 3950fps out of 22" sporter barrel, great wildcat simple neck up, no fireforming, no custom dies, great brass and you don't have to set back a 223 barrel to rechamber.

6mm-204 with 55gr NBT Lead Frees for those non-toxic areas, uses the same die as the 22-204 with the expander ball and bushings changed out. Rechamberred a 6x47 Rem barrel with the 22-204 reamer with a 6mm pilot

25-204 with 100gr Partitions at 2850 fps, matches ballistics of the original 250 Sav and 257 Roberts, my deer rifle. I had a custom die made as I built it the year after the 204 Ruger was released and Redding wasn't making the 204 Ruger Type S bushing die yet. I have used the Redding die to reload this with correct bushing and expander ball. I did have to open the die a little for the 25 cal neck.

22-250 and 35 Whelen, they were still wildcats when I started shooting, they built their reputation as wildcats.

I should get my 20 Practicle on tuesday, Thank You Ritch
