will a 1:9 twist in 223 stabilize a 60gr?

Should do fine as Hornady's 60 gr. V-max calls for a twist rate of 7-12". Try them out, they have worked great in my 7 and 8 twist barrels.

Yes it may shoot slightly better then the 55'sas the 1 in 9" twist will shoot up to 70 grain bullets without a hitch.

My 1/9s eat 60s like candy... My 1/12 puts 60s in 1.25" groups at 200 yards... So, unless there is a special problem with your barrel, it will handle them nicely...

The owner of the reloading shop I go to claims that 60's shoot the best out of a 1 in 9. My 60gr Vmax loads seem to do the trick nicely for me.

Yep. I have run 60gr v-maxes, 62gr TSXs, 69gr SKMs, and 75gr Hdy. BTHPs out of my 1-9s with no problems........

+1 on best. my best group was with 60 Vmax 3/8". And plenty of 1/2" groups. I first tried Benchmark and now use Varget with the 60 gr Vmax. Alec

I have read in shooting magazines that 12 twists will stabilize most 60 grain bullets so a 9 twist should be better.

My trouble is I always want to shoot 40-55 grain bullets out of the .223 Remington gun for the velocity and I can't find a 12 twist AR any where or even a hunting model AR that is under 7 lbs. Its irritating.

ZE, RRA makes a 12 twist in their 24" Varmint, but it is a heavy pig.
I had Compass Lake Eng. make me a 18" 10 twist SPR profile upper.Think of it as between a Hbar and a LW profile. It shoots the 60 BT well, but not as good as the 50's. # years ago the price was right in line with what a better upper from the other manufactures was running. And it was built by an Icon in the AR world.

Orrbull48,

Should do fine. I have a R-15 with 1x9 twist and i shoot the 55gr Blitzking and the 65gr. spbt by sierra for cougars and deer. Both do less than an inch for sure. I actually used the exact data in the Sierra manual for loading. They have an ar section for a 223 with 1x9 twist. Mine has a 22in barrel.

Nice photo.
