Will a coyote cross a river to get to the call?

I have been calling quite a bit around a river, and have noticed that I am able to get coyotes to answer me across the river, but they will not come over.

All of the coyotes I have shot at this location have 'dry feet', thinking that the ones that did come to the call were on my side.

What is everyone's opinion on this?

Thanks for your help and opinions.

Well, I've not seen any swim to come to a call.
However, if the river is very shallow, I suppose they might. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif
I think the only time I know of calling them across from the other side was when the river was frozen.
I have seen them swim the river to exit the area...but that wasn't while calling them. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Rivers are natural boundry lines for coyotes, so you're not likely to get them to cross. I've seen videos (Randy Anderson) with setups using the river as down-wind protection because the hunters were certain the coyotes wouldn't cross.
I called three coyotes right up to the edge of a "river" (about 20 feet wide, less than 2 feet deep) last winter in the dead of night. The river was not frozen and the coyotes weren't willing to cross - which was just fine because they were within 40 yards of me anyway. The key to success that night (if you call getting 1 out of 3 "success") was using the howler. They ran right up to the edge of the river and held tight. Once the rivers around here freeze and we get a little snow there are coyote tracks all over the place - it's like the frozen river is some kind of interstate for them!

Some of the CRP managers around here use a rule like songdogslayer mentioned. The 20&2, 20ft wide and 2ft deep. In some CRP lands that I have worked with, we dug trenches and created islands in wetland areas. These trenches were at least 20ft wide in order to give waterfowl a safe haven from predators. They say a coyote will not cross a 20ft wide section that is around 2ft deep or deeper.

In one of the Randy Anderson videos I have, Randy and his son set up and attempt to call a coyote across a river. They call two right down to the edge but they won't get their feet wet. The river didn't seem to bother his son's 22-250 though. That bullet went right across!!!

I have a call in eastern Oregon that is divided by a large creek. I don't really know how wide or deep it is. But I've killed two coyotes on my side that were soaking wet. Both times it was was early in the year with temps in the eighties.

Mark Zepp's "Callin' Coyotes" video has actual footage of a coyote crossing a river to the call. The river is not deep or 20 feet wide but he comments that he's known them to cross water before.
