will a red headlamp be enough to night call

Hey I was just wondering if you absolutely need a spot light or if you can call and make it work with a great red head lamp. Are they bright enough for what you need or is using the halo of the light a real neccesity?

Most likely, no. Headlamps just don't put off the amount needed when you have a red filter. Those red filters really dim the light and visibility and you want as much light as possible.

Personally, I think a good headlamp is all that is needed. I've used a nitelite quite successfully for 20+ years. Of course, I've also used a tactical light on my shotgun for the last several years. It helps to light up the target just for the shot. I use the headlamp solely for locating and keeping track of the animal as he approaches.

A predator's eyes will glow like light bulbs from a loooong way off with the dimmest of red lights.

We regularly pick up eyes at 300 yards with the wizard II. That's with a red lense. All our shots are at rimfire and shotgun ranges, and target I.D. is not a problem inside 150 yards. They are easy to carry, and the batteries last several hunts between charges. You may want a larger light if you take longer shots. My .02
