will an ATV battery work??

I have the same question I was looking at one and it said it was 9 amps but there was one for a lot more $ that was 12 amps what is the time running distance between the two.
Dont meen to but in reflex just wondering the same question.

An ATV battery will work fine. But consider this: It is a lead acid battery and has acid in it. usually all of the ATV batteries have acid just like a car battery with vents at the top so the battery can breath.

For night hunting I would go with a SEALED lead acid battery, safe, reliable, less weight (sometimes), you wont have the acid smell from it (even though you can't smell it your prey can and potentially give you away), and finally no possibility of it spilling/leaking in your truck, clothing, or gear.

You can charge the Atv battery at a higher rate of charge due to unscrewing the cell caps and letting them breath. A sealed battery will allow you to charge @ 2amps/hr for safe charging without the battery getting too warm and breaking the seal.

How long should it last? That would depend on the spotlights current draw on the battery. Hope that helps ya out. WOY /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I just tried out a home built set up last night.
I took the battery out of my vexlar added a plug in and hooked up a 1.5 mill.light seemed to work well.
light started to dim after 1-1/2 hrs. but even then I could still see 150 yds.We can only use shot guns here so thats not a problem, could get about 2 maybe 2.5 hrs useable light.
iblong.

I agree to make sure you use a Sealed battery. Most 12v 12amp batteries I've found weigh in the 8lb range. Should give you close to 2 hours or better of runtime, depending on light draw. If you can add a rheostat, you can extend battery life quite a bit. I have an old 300,000cp qbeam (old bright yellow light). I plan to buy a SLA battery, charger, & make my own filter for it. I have some foam to cut & fit into bottom of a camo soft day pack, for the battery to set. Still has enough room for other gear. I like this light as it has a flood/spot setting. The flood setting is even less candlepower, so it doesn't drain battery as fast. I forgot I had this light in garage. Dug it out, cleaned it up & tested it last night. Will be plenty light for hunting here in WV. Now if I can find or make a filter somehow.

Take care,
HS

electric wheel-chair batteries are sealed and have the highest amp hour rating.. they last the longest of "man portable" batteries.

On a 1 million CP light how long can you run it on a truck battery and still be able to have enough juce to start the truck up. Thinking abought pulling it out of the truck go hunting come back and hook it back up to the truck again and be able to go home with enough juce.

yer back must be stronger than mine. i carry a lawn mower battery in my back pack and after i've walked for a bit you know it's there. i do keep my battery in several grocery bags to lesson the chances of acid getting on the backpack, even though it's a $9 pack. the acid shouldn't be to big of a deal unless i go a__ over tea kettle, the acid won't spill.
