will bears eat it?

I have some old, disgusting pig fat that has been sitting in a barrel in my shed for 6 months. Don't ask me why, just tell me, will bears eat it, assuming I have the stomach to unleash it? Or should I just take the whole barrel to a PETA convention and take the lid off? Thanks.

they may not eat it but they will check it out !I do know that a bait we used work well was bacon grease mixed with honey or a bag of powder jello put on the ground or on a tree stump we used strawberry it worked well.

Like Elmer said, they might not eat it but they will check it out. I've found that they would rather have fresh meat to eat..... Also around here they would rather have beef than pork.

yes bro they will eat it the stinkier the better and if it is legal to bait i would just throw the barrel out there and then pick it up after season it used to be legal here in colorado but not anymore.

good luck

shoot straight, have fun

I think bears like stinky, rotten meat because of the maggots that come with it. I think bears are always hungry and they will eat some rancid meat if they are hungry enough. I dont bait bears because I live in California and it is not legal here. The same guy that cought Yotehunter5's cougar for him has run bear and cats for a long time. Cats in Nevada and bear in California. He said that he has seen dead deer that were stinking to high Heaven and were covered in maggots. He told me that bears lick the maggots off of the carcass and leave the stinking meat sometimes. Sounds groce but we dont think like bears.

bear diets change as the summer goes on in the spring i would say yes they would eat it about the aug. 1 they start lookinging for bugs ripping open rotten logs till the berrys and fruit comes on if a bear stinks that is what the meat will taiste like i like to get mine out of the apple orchards not garbage dumps

If a bear can wrap a lip around it, he will probably eat it. Some of the stuff I have seen them eat at garbage dumps would gag a maggot!

If you plan on eating the meat, be choosy about where you kill your bear. Apple fed bear are first rate. Lacking that I would head for the oaks and acorns. Never been around cactus fruit, so I can't vouch for that. Stay away from the gargabe dumps and salmon streams. I don't know about the bears up north that catch and eat live salmon, but the ones around here that have been eating dead fish aren't worth the price of the bullet!

Rule of thunb up here is if its black bear your after the sweeter the better. Stay away from any kind of meat product. We don't bait the big boys but the more greases and meat products you have the more Browns/Grizz's you get at the bait station and this isn't good business (Keeps the blacks away when monsters around).

A second guess at the fat. If you put it out in the fall. I would have to bet top $$ that the blacks would eat it too. They are trying to pack on fat and in the fall they would probibly choose it over a donut or two.

Word of caution. Check your regulations on putting out pork. Some places it's against the law because of the fact that bears can get the same disease that pigs can get. Trichonosis. (SP?)

Just a head's up.
