winchester 1400 vs remington 1100 12 gauge

Just wondering what your thoughts are on the two. I have a remington 1100. I did have 2 just sold one on here. But anyways a friend of mine wants to get a semi auto for night time and i told him to get a remington like mine or maybe a mossberg. He said no way that he was going to find a winchester 1400. He said it was a better gun. I hadnt heard anything about the 1400s one way or the other. Maybe someone can fill me in a little? I know he found a 1400 in decent shape for $175 and i found a 1100 for him for $350 that is almost new. What do you guys think Both are vent rib with removable chokes.

they look like nice guns (the 1400) but i have two 1100's and they were my grandpas. so they're both about 20-30 yrs old and still no problems. but idk whatever his personal preference is...

I have 2 Winchester 1400's and I can't say a bad thing about them. They both function and feed shells reliably.

The 1100 was updated in 1987 and renamed the 11-87. It's updates including replacement of the hollow 1100 bolt with a solid bolt to prevent cracking that was common when shooting 3" shells. The other updates are worth the reliability. Just keep it clean and replace the o-rings when they start to crack.

An old 2005 issue of Field and stream listed the Winny 1400 as one of the 3 worst guns ever. I also know personally guys that have shot hundreds of rounds through a 1400 without cleaning it and it never malfunctioned.

I own 2 remy 11-87's and if I was in the market for another auto shotgun, I would look at a Benelli.

I have alot of experience with the 1100/11-87 and the 1400 Winchesters. The 1400 didn't enjoy much of a following amoung trap, skeet, and sporting clays shooters like the 1100 did. This is where 1000s of shells are fired and reliability is everything. The 1400s were more problematic but the Remys had their share too. Neither compaired to the Beretta guns for reliability or balance in a competition gun. As used for a hunting guns, they all worked well enough with normal maintenance. My field guns are Remingtons and Berettas.
