Just bought one NIB off of Gun broker 8/4/18 for a great price. But will have to pay $50 bucks for transfer fee. Whats not cheap is the scope mount and rings. Talley 1 piece base is a $100 bucks ,talley rings another $100 bucks, but Weaver rings are an option for $40 bucks ? Any experience with them ?

Those are beautiful rifles, congratulations on a great gun! Great caliber too!

One word of advice if I may, go with a 2 piece base instead of a 1 piece base, and you will have less accuracy issues, or at least eliminate one of the problems associated with using a 1 piece base...

Leopold makes a nice 2 piece base for the Winchester 1885, and use can use their rings or a host of other rings that are on the market...

That should be a fun rifle to shoot. A store in Tulsa has its baby brother in 17WSM. I'd love to have it but the sticker price on it is not in my budget. Congrats on the new rifle!!

What issues do one piece mounts have that two piece doesn't? Assuming the machining is on spec!

One piece bases are the way to go if you can find one to fit the rifle. Never heard of 2 piece bases being better than one piece. If you look at the Benchrest and long range shooters they all have one piece bases. As far as rings go, I am sure those Talley rings are good. I however, would go with Burris Signature Z rings with the nylon inserts that self align. Never any rings on your scope tube and are a modest $45.

FYI... I wasn't trying to stir anything up! I'm honestly curious as how a 1 piece base causes problems over 2 piece.

I had all information laid out with pictures and explanations of why 1 piece bases detract from the accuracy of these rifles, as well as the Ruger #1, which is one of the worse ones there is, and before I posted it, I got 2 messages from 2 different people over here cussing me out for the post I made concerning a 1 piece base, so instead of hearing all the garbage you guys dish out, I just went ahead and deleted it!

Well sure enough, more crawdad. So predictable...

So what do you use on your High Wall GC.
I always used two piece and they worked fine on both low wall and high walls.
Is this on original 1885s or modern? Winchester or Browning? Is there any difference in the old vs new? I have never had a new one except for a Winchester Low Wall so maybe there is a difference there?
We only had scopes on long enough for load development so maybe any issues just didn't have time to show up. The 45/110 was a pretty good boomer though.
Do still have a scope on the low wall that has been there a few years but it is just a .22.
All in all I think two piece would be fine for a swift and should be cheaper. Leopold is what we used.

I never made any claims about having a Hi Wall or that one piece bases weren't as good as two piece bases, ect. But since you asked, I've never owned a Winchester single shot rifle. I have owned a Browning B78 chambered for 6mm Remington. It was a beautiful rifle with that 26" long octagon barrel and my rifle had excellent wood. My rifle loved hand loads with the old Speer 105 gr. Spitzer soft point and 87 gr. Hornaday BTHP. Rifle had a terrible trigger that locked up causing a trip to the Browning repair facility in Arnold, Missouri. I had a Leupold 3.5x10 in the same base set up that Winny Fan posted. I really don't like that rear base with its windage adjustment opposing screws for the ring. I've used those a few times over the years, never had any trouble with it but in truth I just don't care for it. They are also a bit chunky and being all steel on the heavy side. My experience.

This is a NIB recent manufactured rifle. Sales person on Gun Broker said "Winchester had a short run of these rifle in this Chambering a couple years ago".

Only picture I have of that rifle. It was a Polaroid from the the first house the wife and I ever bought. We were both in college and poor as heck. We had good times and some rough times in that little house way back then. Pretty rifle ...

EDIT: Looking at that scope... that may have been a Weaver or Redfield target scope. Seems like I had one on that rifle for awhile then later swapped it for the Leupold.

Then it is made by Miroku (in Japan). It probably has a rebound hammer and tang safety but don't let either scare you. Miroku makes a top notch gun.
