Winchester 3" lead BB load

it is just something different. I load my own now. For briar patches or what we call "cut overs" where the timber has been cleared and it has now grown up into a jungle of briars, foxes often love these types of places(if the coyotes have not eaten all the foxes). Foxes and bob cats often provide great targets for BB's and T shot which you don't see much of for better pattern density on chokes that lean toward the more open side.

Just another tool in the tool box.

It sure would be nice if one of the ammo manufacturers would make a fairly fast 3" 1-5/8 oz load with lead BBB or T shot in it.

Each lead BBB pellet weighs about 14% more than a lead BB pellet.

Each lead T shot pellet weighs about 26% more than a lead BB pellet.

Pellets per ounce, BB-51 pellets, BBB-43 pellets, T shot-37 pellets and number 4 buck shot-20.5 pellets.

I just found this, wondered if anyone had ever patterned this load. With only 1 1/2 oz, there would be really good speed if the load will pattern well. Winchester usually does a very good job with it's load development.

There were some reports on use with this load over on the Firearms forum under the shotgun pattern test topic, page 87.

Not exactly same load, Keith, but very close. This load produced best pattern of a bunch tested in my Benelli SBE w/Carlson Hevi-shot Dead Coyote choke (measures .660”).

6" black center 10.1" 6 ring.

Have never gotten around to more range testing, but my son took a nice tom with it last Thanksgiving.

Haven't shot these but I have read good things about their shot-lok technology with turkey loads.

Great product alongside the Hornady offering IMO, gives you the option between the flight control wad hornady uses and the shot-lok winchester uses with basically identical shot in each load. Personal preference based on the choke you prefer, wide for the hornady flight control or tight for the "traditional" winchester. Still copper plated lead at the end of the day...

I wonder if the Carlson's Long Beard choke tube with a .660 constriction would work good with the Varmint X load? The tube was supposedly designed to work well with the Winchester Long Beard turkey load featuring the same Shot-Lok technology the Varmint X loads have.

the winchester is not plated.

The descriptions i've read said 1-1/2 OZ plated BB, i'm assuming thats copper.

do not know where you read the descriptions. the winchester lead bb i have is not plated. maybe they forgot the plating on mine.

the hornady bb is plated. but it is nickel plated. for whatever that is worth.

Hey, Slick, looks like we're just behind the times.

I hadn't heard of the Varmint X, either. GC's link gives more info:

Quote:The BB’s are a copper plated, lead BB size pellet that delivers the energy that you need to knock coyotes down in their tracks. http://melissabachman.com/2016/02/05/a-new-predator-load-from-winchester/

The plain lead shot best patterns in my shotgun but it is plain lead and the Shot-lok sounds promising + copper plated shot. Gotta try some of these.

Reagrds,

I'm going to order a couple boxes of the Varmint X and a Carlson's Long Beard choke to try out. I'll share results when it all gets in. Also I'm going to get it from MidwayUSA. The Winchester Long Beard XR 3" 1 3/4oz #4 loads are on sale for 6.74 a box, regularly 17.99, if anyone needs some for turkey season.

Hm, that pattern will eat up a coyote, fox, or bob cat! Congrats!

It is very hard to find anything in shot shells for predators in this area, mail order is the only way to get anything...too bad.

F Buck is awesome on coyotes that I loaded some years ago.

There is a guy making molds for buckshot in F buck. Lee makes a mold for #4 buck. The advantage for the die hards would be to use pure linotype, or straight wheel weights mixed 50/50 with linotype, jees that stuff is hard. The 45's that I cast will not deform in sand with the 50/50 mix.

Patterned well to 60 yards penetrated through 3/8 plywood. Haven't shot a coyote with it yet. Supernova carlson's dead coyote choke
