Winchester 670 action ?

I traded for a winchester 670 30-06 with the plans of a build. I have searched for information about them to make sure the action is good to build off of. There's not a lot of info out there on them. Has anyone built off the action? I'm thinking 6-06 or 6.5-06. But that's not set in stone. I contacted Derrick at HORIZONFIREARMS about it all he said is he is just a little weird about them but could do it. What are your opinions or does anyone know who I could talk to about them. Thanks.

Here's some formation that I posted about the rifles awhile back in response to a similar question:

"There were actually three variations of economy Winchester bolt action rifles based on the Model 70 action produced in the early post 64 years.

All original Model 670 rifles had the two position Remington style trigger mounted type safety. A total of approximately 287,000 of them were built between 1966 and 1979. One interesting chambering for these early rifles was the 225 Winchester cartridge. In 1972, the Model 670 was supplemented by the improved/upgraded Model 670A which had/has the traditional 3 position safety.

In addition to these two, the Model 770 was a middle grade rifle produced from 1969-1972 with production totals of approximately 21,000 rifles."

So if you have the original Model 670 you'll see similarities to the Rem 700 with the safety. If yours is a newer Model 670A, it will have the traditional side swing 3 position safety mounted on the bolt shroud.

Either way, its not a bad choice probably to build from depending on what you want the outcome to look like and how you want it to function in total. But either one is probably not a first choice of most builders either for a custom since a true push-feed post-64 Model 70 is not that much more expensive and they are readily available in good condition.

Mine is a 3 position safety. I traded for around $350 for it. There's just something about winchesters I like. I just thought it might be a decent action for a build. As far as out come I don't really care about looks I just want an acurrate something different.

i had to take a look at my 3 Post 64 winchesters--222 rem 225 win and 243 win--all have the 3 position safety and stamped Model 70-- would it say model 670 if they were?? Thanks for the info--Their all all great shooters--That 225 is a great round------svb

Mine says 670 on the barrel. But it does have the 3 position safety. The main thing that drew me to this rifle when I traded is it has see through rings and open sights with a bushnell scope on top.

If it has the 3 position Model 70 safety, you have a Model 670A.

Think of the rifle as being similar to the entry level priced Model 70 Ranger which came later. The only difference between the 670A and the Ranger was the fact that most of the Rangers had full Model 70 bottom metal while the 670A had a closed bottom blind magazine with just a trigger guard. Kinda' like the difference between an ADL and a BDL Rem 700. The 670's were made for discount retailers and bargain hunters. K-Mart in it's hay day sold many of these rifles in their stores in both the original and in the A configuration.

Winchester used the letter "A" designation on dozens of different models of guns, and they always used it to designate a production change or improvement. In this case the production change was from a two position trigger mounted safety to the traditional bolt shroud mounted 3-position safety associated with the Model 70 rifle in general

At any rate, if it's a Model 670A with the traditional Model 70 style safety, it's probably worth spending some money on from my perspective. If it had the two position safety like the original Model 670's did, it probably would not be worth the effort to build from it, again from my perspective.
