Winchester 748

Does anyone use Win 748 powder for .223 or .308 loads? Im using 40grain v-max's in the .233 and 165 grain soft points in the 308. I'm looking for some load data on these rounds with the 748.

What's the twist rate on the barrel of your .223??? I have one for 40gr V-max that shoots really well out of my 1/12 and 1/9 twist barrels...

I've used W-748 for years in my .204s, .223s, and have a bunch of test loads made up for my .308, but with 175gr bullets in the .308

it's a great powder for both rifles... the .308 with Winchester brass will like around 44.4 grains with 168 match bullets... and 44.6 grains with the 165's is a good target area. With LC cases, drop those charges by .4 grains (and work up, yes, as always)...

W748 burns about like 4064 and Varget, so you're going to get similar velocities with like amounts of those powders (self-appointed mall cops stand down, I did not say exchange data with these powders!

)...

Folks who use 748 in non-optimal charge weights report temperature sensitivity, but with the right charge amounts, it's not going to swing velocities in temp changes nearly as much as some would have you believe. Of course it's not as good as any extruded powder for temp stability--but again, not as bad as you sometimes hear reported, provided you've loaded right.

W748 meters like a dream, and seems relatively consistent lot-to-lot in my experience.

With 175's in the .308 using Winchester brass good performance should be found in the mid 43 grain range, likely around 43.5 grains... 43.1 grains for Lake City brass.

And mine in .204 for . . . Well about a month now, but I've got one hole groups out of 40 gr VMax 's everybody says the .204 doesn't like. I use W748 in my .243 so it makes since that it wild be fine in a .308.

Thanks gentlemen. The 223 is a Savage Edge and I think it has a 1 in 9 twist rate. The 308 is a Rem 700 varmint and Im not sure what the twist rate of it is. I've only started reloading since about the first of the year. My cousin left me his setup, he had some older powder,(still in the metal cans). I've worked up a load for the 223 from an older Lyman book using some 4895 powder, and 40grain v-max's. I was able to shrink my groups from about 3in down to about 3/4 in at 100, which ain't bad for that rifle. I got the win 748 because it was all the store had that was listed for a 308. Since reading these posts it sounds like it may have been a fairly decent choice afterall. I really appreciate all y'alls help. I plan on loading some up in the next few days and hopefully will get to try them out pretty soon.

I worked up a fairly decent load yesterday, started out with 27gr. and went up to 28gr. The 28's shot pretty good. At 28gr. the case is pretty full. Is this fairly consistent with what everybody else is loading? I'm shooting 40gr v-max's. Would anybody have a clue as to what kind of speed this would be producing, doesn't really matter, I'm just curious. Thanks

About 3600 fps @ 40,000 Kpsia.

That's faster than I expected. I'm new to reloading and just wondering is that a safe load, I didn't hear it crunch when I set the bullet, so I don't think its a compressed load. I was a little worried about the pressure that might create, but the empties showed no signs of any damage.

W-748 is a very slow powder for the 223... you can not get enough 748 in the case to be dangerous.

WW-748 is one of my favorite powders for the .223 , 204 Ruger and .222 Rem. as well. With the heavier bullets WW-748 can produce top velocities. The latest Nosler #7 shows WW-748 as the top velocity powder with their 69 gr. match bullet @ 98% loading density. My other manuals concur.

I've used 748 with 55 gr. bullets in the .223 but not tried it with the lighter bullets. The Hornady manual shows 748 with a 45 gr. bullet getting 3400 fps.

Here is a post of mine from Feb. 2012 that shows what my 16" Sportical did at 300 and 400 yards with a load of WW-748 and a 69 gr. SMK.

eta.... The New Nosler manual shows WW-748 and the 40 gr. bullet as their most accurate load @ 28 grains yielding 3547 f.p.s. and 100% loading density.

I use 748 in both the 223 and 308 and it has worked great for me, in the 223 it has worked well in different rifles and bullet weights.

THANKS GUYS! I GOT ME A LOAD THAT MY RIFLE LIKES PRETTY GOOD, 28 GRAINS. I WENT UP TO 28.5 AND THE GROUPS STARTED OPENING BACK UP. I DIDN'T HAVE ALOT OF TIME SO I DIDN'T LET MY BARREL COOL BACK DOWN AFTER EACH GROUP BUT I REALLY DIDN'T HEAT IT UP THAT MUCH. AS TIME PERMITS I'M GONNA PLAY WITH IT SOME MORE. I'M NEW AT RELOADING SO IF YOU DON'T MIND MY ASKING WHAT DO YOU MEAN WHEN YOU SAY A 100% LOAD. THANKS

WHY ARE YOU SHOUTING WITH ALL CAPITALS!!!

100% loading density means that the powder goes up to the base of the bullet...

.

Sorry. I didn't realize I had the caps lock on, my bad. I guess a 100% load is just shy of a compressed load if i'm reading you right.
