Seems the 140 grain Hornady FTX is the way to go for this rifle.

Any body have any idea on a good powder for 38 SPL in a rifle?

I've only loaded target loads in 38, but have good luck with Unique in 357 rifle loads. I would guess the major loading manuals would list a variety of powders listed, maybe 800x would burn cleaner.Sounds like a fun project, are you going to hunt with it ?

Thanks for the replies,

I have every load manual that exists and a long list of powders. I don't know squat about loading pistol cartridges for rifles though. Unique seems to echo a couple times.

I doubt i will hunt with this rifle. Maybe just plink rabbits and such?

Sierra says W296, A#5 and Silhouette give the best velocity. ( 158gr FN) I will look at a burn chart and find the slowest one of those as a cross reference.

I may call them up and ask.

same loads for handguns is what I have done. You'll get quite a bit more velocity out of them. I think I use unique in 38spl loads with cast bullets. Makes a great rabbit or grouse gun.
