Winchester Model 670

Anyone know anything about these guns? I've been looking for a rifle to start some more varmint hunting and my father says a coworker of his has a Winchester Model 670 in a .243 with a 4x Weaver on it for $200. Is this a good deal and is a Model 670 available to different modifications down the road(i.e. Trigger, barrel, stock, etc.) Thank for you help.

The 670 was marketed as an economical model 70. I think the working parts are the same so parts should not be a problem. It was dropped from the line in 1974.
I think for 200 it might be a good buy. I think you will be disappointed with the scope but it will work. next year you can get a trigger job and new scope!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

That's what I was hoping is that the triggers/stocks for a 70 woiuld be compatible. I think I'll buy it just for the deal, even if I don't use it for a varmint gun, there's always deer season. As for the scope, I'm not a weaver guy so I'll probably throw a Bushnell on that I have.

Be aware there are two different versions of the 670 out there. The difference is in the safety. One is virtually a dressed down M70, the second has a two position safety on the right side of the action, much like the Remington 700. I don't know about particulars, as I recently learned this myself. Here is a link to a Gunbroker ad for the second variety:

In all honesty, I only looked into the 670 as My local store had one in 3006 recently for $299. I've not seen many under that price since I started looking.

I bought one back in the 70's used. It also was a .243 a carbine version with an 18" barrel as memory servers me. Put a little 3 X 9 Trashco on it. Probably the best shooting little rifle I've ever bought that was not rebarreled. With 87 Gr. Hornadys and a good load of IMR 4350 it would shoot under dime size groups any day of the week. Took one two point Blacktail with it. Made me a real .243 believer. You will find that the little action is very ridged. I've been looking for another one off and on ever since I sold it to my buddy for his son to hunt deer.
