Winchester Super X Model 1

Hello,

I am considering buying a used shotgun for my coyote hunting and want to know what the experts think of the Winchester Super X Model 1. The one I'm looking at comes with two barrels (27" Modified and a 30" full choke).

If you have any experience with this gun or have some input, I sure would like to hear from you. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Thanks,

Had two of them back in the late 70's. They are very nice and very functional shotguns. They are well made and I enjoyed them. If the prices are reasonable to you I'd recommend them.

The Winchester Super-X model 1 (1973-1982) was the finest and over engineered shotgun ever built in the United States.

The easiest shotgun to take a part and clean and will always function. The Super-X has short-stroke gas system and was the shotgun of choice for Ron Saterwhite until Benelli became his sponser. Ron shot the Super-X because nothing cycled faster than the Super-X for a gas operated shotgun.

You can bet Ron Saterwhite still ownes them.

The Trigger group was up-dated by the factory above serial number 34,000. The wood was changed above serial number 44,000 to a traditional pattern. I have never seen a serial number above 87,000.

Buy the shotgun...your great grand kids will be shooting it.

And yes....I own several of Super-X shotguns.

Rustydog, the sx-1 is a great shotgun. Make sure you replace the bolt buffer first thing. The original buffers were made of a hard plastic and after all these years are brittle and will break and fall apart. The recoil spring should also be replaced, Nu-line gun repair has parts and a schematic on their website. However I believe their buffers are the original Winchester buffers. Wright's gun shop has new neoprene buffers that are very good. Wright's recoil springs need to be shortened about 1 1/2" to make the gun cycle properly. The two items I mentioned replacing provides cheap insurance to insure not damings the bolt and receiver and proper functioning. I also have a few sx-1's and love them.

The recoil buffer on mine Super-X 1's are aluminum. This is the non steel part in the shotgun. Until the Buffer slot hole starts to in large it will be fine for 20,000 rounds.

Hoggy, If I'm not mistaken, the part you're referring to is the return spring follower. The bolt buffer is located right above the follower, in the rear of the receiver.

Doc Hoggy,
I know John Satterwhite, exhibition shooter, Olympic medalist, etc.....But who the heck is Ron Satterwhite???? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif

My father has one. Truly, an excellent shotgun. I just bought a Browning Gold last year. While I do love my new scattergun, I would stack Dad's SX-1 against it all day long.
