Wind Speed

What's the maximum wind speed for hunting foxes and coyotes? The wind is about 10-20 mph right now and I don't know if it's worth it. I'm only going to be in this area for a few days, however, so I want to get in as much hunting as possible.

Sometimes we go when we can get the time and play the averages with the wind. I don't like anything more than fifteen miles an hour myself. Much above that and I can't hear what is aproaching. A lot of the oaks hold their leaves well into the winter adding to the noise level. This just makes it harder for them to hear it as well. Just shorten up the distance you go between stands and pick the best spots possible in higher winds. Jimmie

I go when I can get the time to hunt, wind be damned. I don't like heavy winds, it's uncomfortable and I don't call as many animals. But I go anyway and occasionally it all comes together regardless of the wind.

I hunt low, down in the hollows away from the wind, the lee side of the ridge if I can. If it's cold and I can, I hunt the southern slopes where it may be warmer if there's sunshine. I make tighter set-ups, closer together. You won't hear approaching critters, so be extra vigilant keeping your eyes "peeled" for animals coming to the call. Everything is moving, all the brush, leaves, ect. so critters can sometimes slip in and out without you catching them. Be alert! I really like a 3D camo parka. In the wind you can simply be non-existant with one of these. Personally, I think high winds scatter scent to and fro, making it more difficult for critters to pin you down right to your spot. They may be a little more confused and they may be more cautious because of it. I seem to have fewer fast movers rushing to the call and more critters slipping in for a look see before actually committing.

I agree with Jimmie & GC.
Another thing to think about when hunting around timber in wind... dead wood!
Getting smuckered with a big limb or tree is NOT good.

I learned that lesson early on as a kid. I was out squirrel hunting on a windy morning and had been sitting against a big old tree for awhile. I decided to get up and move and when I was about 50' away I heard a huge crashing sound behind me. I turned and saw a huge limb come crashing straight down and drive itself butt first straight up and down six inches in the ground right where I had been sitting! The butt of the limb must have been 12" around and the whole thing some 20'+ feet long. Looking back up it looked as if it had fallen thirty or fourty feet as it dragged a big wild grapevine all the way down the trunk scarring up the bark leaving a trail. Pretty sure it would have killed me for sure had I still been sitting there. Nowadays I always look up before I plop my butt down agaisnt a tree. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
