Winter Coyotes and Fleas?

I know this is a stupid question but it's a stupid question that I dont have an answer to.

If I get a coyote during the winter, do I still have to worry about fleas and ticks? Should I "flea bomb" the hide in a bag as soon as I get it home?

I shot a Bobcat a few winters ago. Weeks before I shot it it had been very cold -10 to -20 degrees. The day I shot the Bobcat it was about 0 to -10. Let just say that the beautiful cat had fleas.

Not worth the risk of taking them home with you. Proceed as usual regardless of the temp.

So you're saying I shouldn't take them home? Put it in a bag in the field?

I haven't gotten a coyote yet so I don't know the details on what to do after the kill.

As soon as I walk up to one after the shot, and if I want to save the hide, what should I do? Walk up to it, place in bag with flea powder?

Any help would be appreciated.

Put it in a plastic garbage bag and spray with raid or any good insect killer, tie it shut and leave it that way for a while. If you skin the coyote and are just taking the hide home do the same thing. Do this soon after you kill it and before you put it in your rig.

I don't save fur anymore. AZ fur isn't worth the time and effort to me. When I do take a dog back to my truck I drag it with a piece of cord. If I were going to take it home to skin, I would bag and spray it before I unloaded it. You'll be OK as long as you don't sling it over your shoulder and carry it back.

Some guys skin them in the field which is what I would do. Easier to dispose of the carcass and no threat of taking something home to your pets or family. Use latex gloves and spray yourself with some good repellant. You'll be fine. It's when the blood stops flowing for a long enough period of time that the resident fleas start looking for a new host. I've skinned plenty of them without using any precautions and don't ever remember getting any fleas....but kids wear helmets while bike riding now too.

I don't plan on saving the fur to sell, I'd just like to have my first Coyote tanned so I can keep the hide.

If skinning in the field, should I just spray the dog down before skinning?

Be careful not to poison your self. I've only skint a couple special ones and never bothered with the bag thing. Never had a problem getin' the fleas.
I wouldn't carry it inside a vehicle. I would get the huntin' gear off (don't want to get chemical smell on your huntin' gear). Spray the yote down with lysol spray (away from home or pets) and I bet the fleas will bail off. Just my .02.
