Wisconsin Coyote Calling - Most Difficult?

I can't find the thread now, but I read a few comments on here about Wisconsin being the most difficult state for calling coyotes. I'm brand spanking new to this and have no basis to form a personal opinion. I'm just curious to see if this is the general consensus regarding my home state. Do you agree? Disagree? If you agree, what factors make it more difficult?

yup. I have been at it for 8 years now and I have seen 2 toyes. I go about 6 times a year.

There are not that many yotes and now a days anyone can buy an ecaller at any walmart, fleet farm, gander ,ect.....Less yotes nad more callers. I dont think they are being shot they are being educated FAST.....If it wasnt for the money that I have tied up into it I would probably quit...A ruger rifle, foxpro caller, hand calls, snow camo, choke tubes, ect....Also take account that there are not many yotes and then the ones that we do have end up being taken by the guys running dogs.....

I was out this morning for 1 quick set. Didnt see anything or cut any tracks. Thats how it always goes.

Yea and MN is horrible too, so stay out....

Actually, I have yet to call one in in MN, so there does seem to be some weight to that comment, heck we hunted around a spot with several gut piles the other week, more coyote tracks then I've ever seen, called for 2-3hours with no results.

But, I find it hard to believe there are few coyotes in Wisconsin, the habitat is there and so is the food.

I'll be hunting MN for the next couple weeks, maybe I just haven't learned my lesson yet.

You aren't going to kill them on the couch, we know that, talk to farmers and townsfolk, usually people aren't to shy about cussing out a yote and pointing you to them.

My B in L seems to do pretty well in WI but he gets calls from locals that are having coyote problem. He does call in a few on public land but calls more bobcat and wolves than cayotes there. I used to get a few north of Wausau hunting and east of Andigo trapping when I lived in WI in the 70's. Used to see quite a few while bow hunting around Neceeda and Babcock.

I believe it is very difficult here along the Mississippi. I have been calling for 5 years and up unil last year I didn't kill one. Last year a friend and I shot 11. Saw 30 some over the coarse of 3 months. It is very hard to get one to come out in a field with all the hills and ditches and valleys. Most of them can get down wind and you'll never see em. So far in two weeks we called one out of a dozen sets and he busted us somehow and didn't even see him till he was runnin at about 600 yards. Wind was in our favor but I think he came up a ditch and got too close to the call and we nver even saw the sneaky little sucker.

Michigan is pretty tough too. I hear and see them all the time bow hunting but calling them is tough. This is my 5th year and I've only called in two. Hopefully this winter will be good to me.

Like any other type of hunting, success depends alot on where you have the ability and access to hunt. If you are fortunate enough to have access to private land that has low hunter pressure you can have decent response rates when calling. The big thing I have found in the past is our coyotes are hard to call into the open fields in the daytime. If you primarily hunt during the day, try sticking to the woods and thicker cover where they feel safer approaching from the downwind side. You will be giving up some visibility, but I have found they will check out a call much more readily if they have cover to approach from the downwind side.

Night hunting is a different story though. I have had good success the past few years with snow cover under moonlight. Coyotes around here seem to feel much more at ease coming out in the open to respond to a call then. Just my 2 cents. Good luck!

Just received my Kill Light yesterday and plan to try some night calling this winter. Sure hope it is more productive than day calling. I to hear coyotes almost every night while bowhunting in my area and the trail cameras have pics of them quite often, but they just won't respond to regualr calls or the e-caller during the daylight.

where do you hunt in michigan ? iam just getting into it this year ,I wen once last year with a budddy .I have a buddy in st clair county who shoots several every year .I hear theres a ton up north .I ve heard some guys are starting to use dogs .

I have the same trouble here in SE Wisconsin. I have alot of acerage with ideal conditions. I see tracks and scat and I'll see them every so often in the early morning. I just started calling Dec. of last yr. and I called just 1 so far. But I'm sure I've been back doored. Just about the time your ready to hang it up you'll see some tracks in a different area which give you new hope and you keep trying. I had heard somewhere on one of the Coyote boards that some Pro's came to Wis. to try calling. I can't remember what they ended up getting but when they left they said it was one of the hardest states they ever called in. Now I don't know if that was BS or the truth?

Trying to call a coyote out of timber or cover during the day is pretty hard, thats why you see them bow hunting because most of the time your in the cover where the deer are. Even here in our dryside deserts if there is a Russian olive grove or wooded low area it's better to set up in the cover than try and call one out of it.

Wooded creek bottoms usually have enough elevation to see quite a ways in the winter. Little bowls in northern WI are great places. You can use those open farm fields as blockers to keep from getting backdoored.

Untill the end of december there are a lot of gut piles and unretrieved deer to keep coyotes bellies full.
