Wolf Bullet

What do you think would be a good wolf bullet for .243. My Tikka shoots really well with 75-vmax and IMR4064. Think the 75-xmax would get the job done?

Depends a little on the size of your wolf, but I would think the 75 v-max would be fine. If not the 87 v-max would be my pick.

I haven't hunted wolf but I'd be happy to shoot one with that bullet. I doubt it will exit with a chest shot so it should be easy on fur. As mentioned the 87 should be a great pick as well.

I would be more inclined to go with a 70-80 grain spitzer type bullet. If you hit shoulder or rib on the way in you will get better penetration. JMO.......

Well call me crazy but I think I'de go with something heavier like a 85 to 100 gr bullet. A wolf is nothing but bone, mussel and gristle and could be pretty hard to put down.

I shoot bunches of the 87 VMAX and have tons of faith in them. I've shot scads of coyotes and at least three antelope that I remember. A wolf is about the size of one of these goats, and I haven't had an issue. It really is a fantastic bullet in the .243.

you just said your tikka shoots really well with 75 v-max. i would think shot placement would kill any wolf with that bullet

GreatNorthWest:

The Great White North thread on this site had a good discussion of this issue several weeks back - check out those archived posts per a search.

Several successful Canadian wolf hunters chimed in and since they have done it their opinion is credible; they supported bullets for penetration and using a stoutly constructed bullet - a bit stouter than a Vmax if I recall.
