Woodchuck Bait for live trap?

I have a woodchuck living behind my house that has been difficult to say the least to get a shot off on him. So I bought a Hav-a-hart trap and am considering trapping him. So, what would be a good bait to use in the trap? The booklet reccomends tomatoes or lettuce, but I think that would trap a coon too. Already had an experience w/ a trapped skunk using tomatoes and lettuce. So is there anything that is a surefire way to trap it? I want to trap it and then kill it, not release it.

If I were to catch a coon, would I be able to throw a blanket over the trap and open up the door and let it go, or will it be ticked off to no avail and will I end up having to shoot it in self defense? Coon Trapping season isn't open.

I would expect that the racoon is more interested in getting away than going after you. Standing behind the trap would probably work ok. You could put a small blanket, burlap, or some material over the trap to calm the racoon. He may just scamper away once he is settled down.

I use apples or pears for chucks. If you do get a coon dont worry about useing A banket just open the trap. Most times they wont run out as soon as you open the door so you can step back and let them leave. If they do go as soon as you open the door they are looking for a tree or some sort of cover. I've never had any coon get agressive while letting them go.

I used an apple just like no_cool_nickname_yet said, and whalaa. I ended up with a young one in the trap. Two shots to the head with the pellet gun took care of that. But before shooting it, if you hit the side of the trap, the critter would pop it's teeth together, like a bear, but on a much smaller scale.. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif It was pretty cool. But nonetheless, the groundhog robbed me and my family of tomatoes & cucumbers and needless to say, we ain't at the top of the food chain for nothin'. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
