Woodcock (Timberdoodle) hunting and recipes?

Season starts here in SC on January 2nd. I have been seeing them frequently when trying to flush out cottontails with my Lab. There seems to be a decent amount of them migrating through and, from what I understand, they don't stay put for long. I would like to try to take a few on opening day. I have been using an IC choke with 1 oz. #6 game loads for rabbit, figured this would be able to pull double duty since the two seasons coincide. Also, anyone know any good recipes? Those that I have seen seem pretty close to quail size or larger.

Here today, gone tomorrow!

Yep about quail size, we use 8 shot out of 20ga or 28ga. SxS's Cyl./I.C. Doodles aren't hard to kill.

You'll either love them or hate them, seems to be very little middle ground. I will say they are edible, others love them.

Look over at Uplandjournal.com for a slew of recipes!

Not if you hit them. Hitting them is the problem, especially in the thickets I have hunted them in.

I'd go with #8's as well. as far as cooking them below is my favorite recipe.

1st Woodcock breast pellets removed soaked in salt water over night.
next day or whenever light charcoal grill get it nice and ready to cook.
take breast dried off and sprinkle McCormicks Montreal steak seasoning on them.
wrap in bacon and use toothpick to secure.
When the bacon is done they are done.
Make sure you are alone or your friends will eat them on.
When we go to the UP every year we save all of them till the last day and cook them at once. You would be suprise how fast 30 or 40 breast will dissapper. Enjoy!!!

Montreal steak seasoning and bacon? Two of my favorite things! I will be trying that recipe!
