i have been looking for a woodpecker call. i own the lil dog and the tweety but cannot do that thing with my tongue prrrrrrr or the ruffles have ridges thing, hell i don't know what im talking about. The thing you have to do with your tongue to get that bird sound i can't do it, trust me not for a lack of trying. I was looking at all predator calls and found two closed reed calls. Heres the link and I was going to see what you guys thought if you want to look at them. Or if you have any other ideas for someone who can't do that with an open reed call. thanks in adv.

Do you have to trill your tongue while doing the woodpecker call using a closed reed call? A closed reed that is a woodpecker call only. Such as the ones on the link above.

Ain't no way that this tongue is trilling. Been p'ing me off since I was like 6 and my sister could do it and I couldn't. Tried, practiced everything and it just ain't happening.

Any way to do it without trilling your tongue?

Get a wood duck call or a pintail caller due to their naturally high pitch and try making fluttering sounds with them. I heard some pretty high pitched dog training whistles that you can peep through to mimic great bird sounds. An adjustable dog whistle can be dialed down so its audible but still high pitch and then just place your finger on the end and take it off really quickly to do a super fast peep, peep, peep, peep, peep, peep, peep, peep may work too. You may not be able to get as fast of a trill but if its high pitched and you kind of do a peep, peep, peep, peep, peep real fast like a heckled Robin or something you will have something pretty close. If you can use a turkey diaphram call or even a glass or crystal "slate" type friction call you can do the kee kee run or just the kee kee call. Also try an
old fashioned whistle and practice blowing lightly in it until the ball causes the "trilling" sound. You may have to take one finger and put it on the upper hole to regulate the air while you're blowing so that the ball flutters faster with less air going through it and to keep the pitch higher.

The ability to trill the tongue, so to speak, is hereditary.

An alternative is to make the purring sound, like a cat, in your throat. It can be alittle more work, but effective also.

I have a Haydels Injuried Woodpecker call, and it makes some good sounds, I also have a JS PC3 and can make the same sounds with that call.

The only down fall that I have with those calls, is that they stick due to moisture. So when your calling for cats and you tend to use the call alot more than you would calling for yotes, The call will freeze up on you from time to time.

I also have a hard time getting the tweety to make good bird sounds, But I have found that you can adjust the reed in a little and it seems to work a little better when trying to make those sounds.
