Woodpecker sound for Coyotes works good........

So, I had this ranch Ive hunted where there are some of the smartest little critters Ive seen in a while. I tried calling these yotes out there in the day time, and looooooong story short, I never could get them to commit....so it was time to change tactics after a month of trying to get them.

I saw these yotes many times in the same pasture and in the same general area, but they never would come in......so after much thinkin, I says to myself, "Self, you gotta hunt at night and change up the sounds big time." So thats what I did....

Last night I went in to that pasture, and sat up with the wind softly in my face. I gave 2 long, lonesome female interrogation howls on the FoxPro. I waited about 1-2 mins and answered back with the hand held howler I brought with me with 2 long, interrogation howls....I waited again about a min or 2 and answered again with the fox pro with a couple long howls.....I wated prob 3 mins, and turned on woodpecker, (a sound I had never used)........about 8 mins in to woodpecker being played off and on, with diff volume levels, I caught red eyes rolling in very hard. He was running and literally bounding through the tall grass, looking for that little woody that was making that noise, he rolled in hard to 80 yards when I shut of the caller and yipped at him. He slammed on the breaks and I sent a 50 grain Hornady out of my Tikka T3 @ 4000 fps and he was DRT.

After a long time of trying to get this yote pair Ive been watching for over a month, I finally got the big male to roll in with some howls and woodpecker at night. Some times changing it up drastically is what is needed...........Third stand of the night, I called in another yote using woodpecker, but my buddy missed the dog so no pic.

I love mixing it up. On the rare occasions when I'm hunting with a friend they always look at me like I'm crazy with what I play as well as the amount of time I spend on a single stand....until I serve them one up that is.

Just curious, how long do you stay on a stand for yotes?

around 45 minutes well over half the time and never less than 20. But most of my stands are just before dusk or at sunrise so I always figure its a peak period and I put in the time to get here so may as well play out it out.

Good job keep whacking and stacking. Are you still running the green light?
Lucky bird is another good sound.
I use to do solo night calling it was hard I wore a head lamp when I caught eyes coming in I turn them off then held my light against the stock and looked threw the scope.
I can hold it that way pretty good now I kill a few here and there in the alfalfa field behind my house.

Im running a wicked red light. I dont really go night calling alone just because it is so hard to hold a light and a gun. Makes it tough. I either go with my partner or talk my wife into going with me lol. Im heading up to the Sierra Nevadas tonight to see if I can call in a yote in the higher elevations. My buddy will run the rifle and Ill have the ol Mossy 500 with buckshot...hope to bring in a mountain dog.

If you include my time on the stand after I start with howls, Im there typically minimum 30 mins almost every time. Sometimes a lil longer. Last night, the first dog came in at 18 min mark from the start of stand with a howl....Second dog was in at about 10 mins or so.

I hunt alone and like the trigger stick. it truly does help! I have a T20 red mounted to my rifle for the kill light...

Rpc55, great idea, never thought or seen that before. I use multiple types of sticks, and continue to go back to my primos bipod. Question: how do you scan with it...are you just twisting the top back and fourth? Then place your weapon on it when you catch something? Then use your gun light....very smart. I like it. Btw, what are the lumens for that light?

Really cool setup you have there.....what kind of range can you get out of that little light? Can you identify a yote at 150 yards?

that is the gen 2 stick. I keep the gun on the yoke the whole time. I can scan the handle part back and forth and my gun stays still. The light is an older xlr100. It picks up eyes past 100 yards...its tethered the to trigger stick with paracord...

The woodpecker distress has proven itself time and again (lucky bird as well) especially when coupled with the MOJO woodpecker decoy. Bobcats are also mesmerized by the combo. It must be that here in the desert at least not many guys use it. It quickly became my go to set up. The decoy is small enough to pack in a vest out of the way and the price is reasonable, however when I saw the results I think they could raise the price and still sell tons of them after you see how they work.

Hey guys for those foxpro users, which woodpecker distress do you have the most success with or are preferred? Because I know there are about 5 different woodpecker noises.

I believe there's about 10-11, but I like/use woodpecker distress, raspy woodpecker, sparrow/woodpecker heard the whaling woodpecker before, but don't have it on my callers.
