Whats everybodys thought when you see a woodpecker? Good sign or bad? I was watching a hunting show (forget which one) and they said when you saw a woodpecker fly across meant there was a good chance of a dog.

Didnt know cause i had a woodpecker this evening but no predators?

Any truth to this.

or are there any other "signs" yall associate with hunting that hints to something is in the area

Woodpeckers don't mean boo around here.

Out west, I hear magpies do mean something if you're hunting in an area with them.

Well I was wondering cause i had one going crazy where i was at and didnt see a dang thing. It was only my second time calling so i may just still suck at calling

If You happen to have a Woodpecker Distress Call it may draw in a Bobcat or Coyote....other then that I don't think a simple Woodpecker in a tree is going to attract anything?

As Kizmo mentioned....several Magpies sounding off and here in Missouri a bunch of Crows grouping up could draw in a Coyote,Fox or Bobcat because they tend to sound off and group up if they find a dead animal or an easy meal so that type of Distress Sound/Call may work to Your advantage!

Now that You mentioned it was making all kinds of noise it could very well have drawn a Predator in....when I turn on the Woodpecker sound on my small Johny Stewart Call I've had several other smaller Birds get all excited and home in by me.....with enough commotion it could very well work out!

Get You a Feather and put it on a stick with a short string or on an over hanging limb and use it while calling..... It works!

If yall use hand calls do you have a special bird squeaker or do yall just use a distress and slide down the reed some more?

I had a thread about calling crows and hawks. In that thread somebody said if they don't call a woodpecker in within the first three or four stands they pack up and go home. I've also read that crows will bring in coyotes and sometimes they follow coyotes.

I don't know if any of this is true, just what I've been told.

I know around here I have had squirrels and blue jays tattle on predators that were coming into the call. And i have had both crows and hawks come in to the call before the intended prey (predator) shows up.

A few years ago a flock of 20 plus doves suddenly erupted off a hillside about 15 mins into a set, I stayed for another 20 minutes with no sign of anything. As I got back to my truck and drove off the biggest bobcat I've ever seen crossed the road in front of us not far from where the birds spooked. I've since had blue jays, woodpeckers, and countless other birds react similarly while calling with zero results. I keep tellin myself there's a cat around though it's most likely just dumb birds being dumb birds.

I've had chickadees and crows follow predators in, but never a woodpecker. From my experience bobcats get pestered by birds a lot more than coyotes.

I know one time when i was bowhunting all the squirrels and birds suddenly shut up and stayed in their trees and about 2 or 3 minutes away a coyote came through about mach 3.

I called in two hawks yesterday and a woodpecker, didnt see anything else

A robin will squawk like crazy if they spot something coming. In try and pay attention to any birds flushing. I have seen crows come by just before a coyote several times.

Woodpeckers? Really? You must not have Blue Jays in your neck of the woods. lol
Around here, they are the painus in the anus.
And the blackbirds and starlings when they come in by the tens of thousands.

We have a bird that is called a "catbird" or thats what old timers call them and they are the loudest bird ever. And when they see you or anything for that matter that will squak and chirp and howl and make all kinds of noise.

During archery season all my squirrels ran to my area after a big kitty walked by. Then they started falling on the ground when they started chattering at me. Now my tree stand is kinda squirrel less. Tie some turkey feathers to coat hanger and stick in the ground by the call. Worked this weekend for me on dogs, had a cat in the afternoon getting really keen on it but never offered a shot.
