Would you believe Varget?

The second week of August, I picked up my third CZ, a 550 American in 6.5 X 55. My Son in Law introduced me to this cartridge; I love it! I have shot a sporterized M96 until this purchase. The old Swede shot well with IMR 4350. I had learned to hand load on the 6.5 and even my crude beginning efforts were reward by the benign Swede with one inch or so groups. Knowing the accuracy of both CZ’s and the 6.5 there was plenty of time until the first deer hunt of November. The Red Gods howled with laughter.

I equipped my self with IMR 4350, the quintessential 6.5 powder. The other powders in the fold were IMR 4320 and Reloader 19. All of the powder bases were covered; now for the bullets. I bought Barnes TSX 120’s, Nosler 125 partitions, 120 BT’s and Sierra 140 Game and Match Kings.

I used my COL tool and got maximum lengths and then calculated and loaded exact lengths. I used the Lyman DPS II to throw exact loads. I prepped brass as if I was in BR. I really did it up right and made a gillion loads w/ usually a 0.2 grain increment building towards a published max load from about 2 grains below that load.

I shot a lot of 6.5. I got a lot frustrated. I loaded and shot a lot more, and besides frustration, panic was beginning to set in. Only the first stages, but it was panic nonetheless. Nothing was working. My loads seemed to be getting WORSE not better. None of the stand by powders was really grouping.

I decided that I had to take a ½ day of vacation and take out some new loads and get it right or take my CZ to the gunsmith. I could not believe it, a CZ that would not shoot! I was about to that point, nothing was going right and now I am getting freaked ‘cuz 11 November is right around the corner. I remembered that back in August I had loaded 25 rounds of 140 Game Kings and 50 rounds of 120 Ballistic Tips with of all things, Varget. I did not like the load density of these loads even a little. I put them on the shelf. However, Varget is my favorite powder for nearly everything. Varget is the you get home at 3 am, with lipstick on the collar, whiskey on the breath and Varget says, get some sleep honey you musta had a hard day kinda of understanding powder. Today I love Varget even more.

At the range, I shot 15 rounds of IMR 4320 w/ Barnes 120 TSX’s in a load range that made me think I had found the answer. This set of rounds was no better than it predecessors. I was near hysteric, but I told myself to calm down and just try the Varget loads, I knew they would not work, but I must try everything before calling Bob and taking him the CZ.

Wouldn’t ya know it! Both the 140 and 120 loads actually formed groups had not seen that since my 204 workdays. These were rough loads with 0.5-grain increments. As the charge weight increased, the group size shrunk. At or near the maximum load for each bullet I had some true 1” groups that could better with tweaking. Finally, a load, you cannot believe the relief. I know it ain’t supposed to be the Premier powder for 6.5, but it is the powder this guy is going hunting with.

The 6.5 x 55mm Swede is an amazing cartridge, probably ... dare I say it ... one of the best of all time. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I tried Varget in a few calibers and was realy disapppointed with velocity so the powder just sat there with all the other orphan powders till one day I saw a load listed for .308 win and decided to try it. When I dumped the charge into the case, powder ran over the top. I called Nosler, no it wasn't a misprint and it was a favorite load with the guy I talked to. I went back and trickled the charge in there, it filled about half the neck, seated the 150 grain Ballistic tip and checked to make sure it didn't push my primer out. Loaded 5 rounds and headed for the chronograph, it ran 2960 something for an average and about an inch group, finaly a use for varget.

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm Varget is some goooooooood stuff man! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Ive used it for a couple years in my 22-250 with some screamingly excellent results. It's on e of the extreme powders as well and holds up to the huge temp. change pretty darn well. I know for SURE that the Coyotes and rock chucks around here don't like me using it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I coulda saved you a lot of trouble. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

On my OCW load recipe page, Varget is listed at 39.2 grains with the 120 grain Nosler BT's. Use a CCI 250 mag primer for better ignition of the low density charge.

For the 140's, you'll get better velocity and lower pressure with 46.5 grains of RL22, which is basically the old Swedish military NC1220 powder. They used 46.3 grains with 143 grain bullets in the M41 stuff. 46.5 will do you right with your 140's.

can't understand why you'd shy away from Varget... I use it for almost everything from the 22-250 to the 375H&H... couldn't ask for a easier to use powder... may not always be the best or fastest but it's always right there amongst the leaders... sure has made my life easier... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Dan: I had just been to your web site, I guess I flat just missed it, have NEVER gotten to the page that you linked me to above, I dunno, just dumb.

Leroy: I thought the charge density was too low. That is a big case with just a bit of Varget splashing around, but now I know, so what, use it.

I get good results with varget in 7-08, 7.5X55, .308, 7.62X54R, .303 Brit and 8X57.

Not always the fastest powder, but always fast enough and accuracy is always good.

Don't get me wrong guys! I think it is a great powder and I would love to shoot it. It just came in 3rd place all the time behind IMR4895 and IMR4320 in my 243 Ackley and 6mm/284. Even tired it in a 7mm WSM and it wasn't as good as WXR? I shot up 2lbs of it so I gave it a fair test.

Sam, the only thing I could get Varget to shoot in was my Tikka .17 Rem using 20gr V-Max's for PD's. Everything else I tried, it just would not work for me either.

I shoot Varget in all my Rifle Calibers except my 25-06 all others it not only worked it gave very good groups 30-06, 260, 257 Rob. 22-250, and it did ok in my 17 Rem.

It will not work in my 25-06 , thats the only cal . I tried and did not get good groups at all, the groups were 1 1/4 or bigger , 3 shot groups.

I tried other powders and got some good groups but Varget was better.

Yes sir, Varget is bought in big quanities for my reloading room. It gives me a ragged 3 hole group in my 22-250, 3/4 group in my .223 and 1/2 group in my .308. And that 3/4 group should reduce once I smith the trigger on my h&r ultra.

ruger300.

I just loaded a bunch of 225 TSX's in my .338 with 64.5 grains of Varget. I got 2860fps avg. and 1 1/4" groups. Good Stuff!

I also use it in all my .223 match loads.
